Eagles Survive NCU Rally to Extend Streak

EUGENE, Ore. – Northwest survived a last-second three-point attempt and its worst three-point shooting night of the season in a 71-69 win Saturday at Northwest Christian.

The victory gives the Eagles their first 4-0 start in the Cascade Collegiate Conference since 2012-13 season.

Hussayn Ford led the Eagles with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Northwest missed nine of 10 three-point attempts in the game but made up for it by hitting 58 percent from inside the arch.

"We found a way to win, but there are definitely a lot of areas to improve on," said NU Head Coach Jeff Drinkwine. "We had three starters in foul trouble in the first half, and our bench came in and did a great job maintaining our lead."

The game was close for most of the first half, but the Eagles used a 9-1 run to take a 37-24 lead with 12 seconds left in the half. Ryan Ricks and Tanner Davis had four points each in the run.

Northwest led 37-27 at the half.

NU kept the Beacons at bay for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the hosts whittled the lead down to three with 6:03 remaining. NCU cut the lead to 68-67 with 25 seconds left, but a pair of Dejwan Walker free throws gave the Eagles a 70-67 lead.

Northwest survived three missed free throws in four attempts in the last 10 seconds and a three-point miss by Ernest Ugoagu at the horn.

Joining Ford in double-figure scoring for the Eagles were Ricks with 13, Davis with 12, and Christian Hakilimali and Cesar Sandoval with 10 each. Ricks also had seven rebounds.

Walker led NU with seven assists. Hakilimali led defensively with two steals and two blocked shots.

Logan Davis and Stevie Schlabach led NCU with 16 points each.

Northwest improved to 8-4 overall and 4-0 in the CCC. The Eagles get the holidays off and return to action Friday, Jan. 3, at Portland Bible College.
