Eagles Endure Sunday Sweep

Written by: Clayton Hashley

Portland, Ore. – Northwest University (1-4) played two games on Sunday against Simpson University (10-6) and St. Martin's University (6-6). Simpson barely edged the Eagles 2-0, and St. Martin's mercy-ruled them 12-3.

Game one – Simpson University 2, Northwest University 0

Neither team had any hits in the first two innings. Excitement came in the top of the third, when Simpson's Juliann Garcia was hit by a pitch to get on base. She later scored a run off a Northwest error. Her teammate, Ashley Oakley, scored later in the inning for the second and final run of the game.

Northwest's first hit came in the bottom of the fourth, when Sammi Caron singled to third base and advanced to second after an error by the third baseman. Rally efforts in the seventh inning came up short, however, as two runners were left on base to end the game.

Northwest's Rachel Hawley pitched 21 at-bats in the game, tallying three strikeouts. Sydney Moorhead pitched for Simpson, tallying 11 strikeouts in the win.

Game two – St. Martin's University 12, Northwest University 3

Three big innings from the Saints pushed them to victory in this game. Their win included a two-run homer in the second inning and six runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The Eagles' major scoring efforts came in the fourth inning, when Nicola Fish scored off a double from Jessi Nunes, and Carly Tighe scored off a sacrifice fly from Sam Parisio. Despite still having three runners left on base, the Eagles were unable to secure any more runs in the inning. Down by nine heading into the fifth, the Eagles' Alexis Contreras managed to score one more run in an attempt to avoid the mercy rule, but fell short, ending the game after five innings.
