GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Northwest University started slowly in the first game, losing to the University of Providence 5-1. The Eagles bounced back quickly and finished strong in game two to defeat the Argos 13-3 in just six innings. This is the Eagles' first mercy-rule victory of the year.
Game one: Northwest University 1 (8-21, 4-12 CCC), University of Providence 5 (5-15, 5-10 CCC)
Hannah VanDomelen, a junior from University of Providence, had the Eagles on their heels, as she threw a complete game and only allowed four hits. The Eagles' bats were silent until the top of the fourth inning when Carly Tighe hit a hard double to bring in Jessica Nunes from first base, giving the Eagles their only run in the game. Carly Tighe led the Eagles, hitting two for two with one RBI.
University of Providence took advantage of an Eagle's fielding error to score three runs in the bottom of the second inning, securing their 5-1 victory. The Argos were led by their right fielder, Taylor Mathews, who hit two for three with three RBI's in the game. Ashley Wood also contributed to their success, hitting one for three with two RBI's.
Game two: Northwest University 13 (9-21, 5-12 CCC), University of Providence 3 (5-16, 5-11 CCC)
Sam Parisio, Alexis Contreras, and
Isabella Gonzalez all found their swing in the second game. Parisio went four for five with two RBI's, Contreras went two for two with three walks, and Gonzalez went three for three with two RBI's and one walk. The Eagles controlled the plate the entire game with 15 hits, 13 runs, and seven walks. The majority of the action came in the fifth and sixth innings, when the Eagles scored 10 runs in just two innings.
Isabella Gonzalez not only performed well at the plate, but she also controlled the game from the pitching circle, holding the Argos to six hits, three runs, and only one walk.
Skyla Nuebauer led the Argos by hitting one for three with two RBI's. University of Providence showed some life late in the bottom of the fifth inning when Nuebauer doubled to bring in KJ Schweikert and Karsten Williams on the play. The Argos scored all three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but it was not enough, when the Eagles responded in the top of the seventh with an additional six runs to claim the Eagles' victory 13-3.
