Eagles Take Walla Walla in Three Sets

KIRKLAND – Northwest, now winners of five of its last six matches, dispatched Walla Walla quickly Friday afternoon, 3-0.

NU won 25-6, 25-11, 25-15 to stretch its set winning streak against WWU to 40. The Eagles are now 16-0 all-time against the Walla Walla.

The Wolves had a -.113 attack percentage for the match and had no answer for the Eagles, who swung at a .413 clip.

"First, on behalf of our team, I want to express our great respect for a Walla Walla team that has been hit hard by injuries and yet battled for every point," said NU Head Coach Steven Bain. "They never let the score or the condition of the match impact how hard they compete and we hope their injured players can return soon. For the most part, we also did a good job of controlling our mindset and emotions.  There were several instances where we weren't as task-oriented as we could have been but for sure our effort and energy were consistent over time and that allowed us to control the match."

Abigail Broussard led NU with 10 kills, six aces, and two blocks. Azaria Johnson had seven kills and Kalei Kepler had six kills and an attack percentage of .857.

Anna Saelens had 33 assists and Allie Flynn made her season debut with three assists to go with two aces.

Cristina Lorenz cleaned up the back row with 22 digs.

Northwest scored the first three points of the afternoon and led 11-1 in the first set. Broussard capped a set-ending 3-0 Northwest run for its biggest lead of the afternoon.

The Eagles broke up a 5-5 tie in the second set with another 11-1 run, including three aces by Broussard. Johnson, Jill Botsford, Reece Denney, and Broussard all had kills in a 4-0 run to end the match.

Walla Walla had three one-point leads in the final set but the Eagles exploded behind Flynn's services and broke a 10-10 tie with an 8-0 run. Flynn had two aces and Karste Wright and Kepler had two kills each in that surge. The Wolves got as close as five points, but NU ended the day with a 4-0 run with two kills by Broussard and a closing kill by Denney.

Now 11-11 overall and 10-7 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, NU hosts Lewis-Clark State at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
