KIRKLAND – Northwest finishes off the regular season for volleyball this weekend with No. 12 Eastern Oregon and the College of Idaho visiting Kirkland at 7 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday, respectively.
Â
Northwest is operating under
King County vaccination requirements and fans are required to present proof of being fully vaccinated or have an acceptable negative Covid-19 test from within 72 hours of the event time.
Â
Northwest recognizes six seniors on Saturday:
Abigail Broussard, Ana Saelens,
Cristina Lorenz,
Vanessa Franke,
Jill Botsford, and
Megan Horne.
Â
The road to the postseason is clogged with four teams trying to squeeze their way into the final two spots in the conference tournament. Lewis-Clark State and Northwest are tied at 11-9, but LCSC owns the head-to-head tiebreaker against NU. One game back of those two are Evergreen State and the College of Idaho. The tiebreaker protocols are (1) head-to-head among tied teams, (2) set wins among tied teams, (3) results of matches vs. the conference from the top down, (4) percent of total sets won, and (5) scoring margin of conference sets.
Â
Northwest (12-13 overall and 11-9 in the CCC) comes in off a three-set loss at No. 7 Corban on Saturday.
Abigail Broussard had 12 kills and two aces.
Anna Saelens had 32 assists.
Azaria Johnson led the defense upfront with four blocks.
Â
Broussard,
Megan Horne, and
Susanna Bailey are giving the Eagles 8.2 kills per set. Broussard leads the Eagles with 3.19 kills, followed by Horne at 2.61 and Bailey at 2.4. Broussard leads that trio with a .314 attack percentage.
Â
Broussard took over the Northwest record with 159 career service aces last weekend. She is third nationally with 57 aces this season.
Savannah Hale is next on the team with 23.
Cristina Lorenz has 20.
Â
Saelens averages 9.89 assists per set this season and has 940 total assists. She is second in the Cascade Collegiate Conference to Bushnell's Makenna Northern (10.67). Saelens could become the first Eagles setter to reach 1000 assists in a season since Alison Simmons's season record 1499 in 2005. Jessie Buck (2003) is the only other Eagle to hit four figures in season assists (1072). Saelens' 940 is currently the fifth-best single-season total in school history.
Â
Northwest is 10-24 in the all-time series with Eastern Oregon after falling 3-1 in La Grande last month. Eastern Oregon has won the last five matches. NU has not won in Kirkland in the rivalry since 2015.
Â
Bailey had 12 kills, and
Kelsey Cummins had 10 digs in Northwest's 3-1 loss at Eastern Oregon. Breanna Shaffer had 15 kills, and Jet Taylor added seven blocks to lead the Mountaineers.Â
Â
Eastern Oregon is 22-6 on the season and 17-3 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The Mountaineers had a seven-match win streak snapped at home Saturday in a 3-1 loss to Oregon Tech. Cambree Scott leads a diversified attack with 2.72 kills per set. Alexis McMurtrey leads with 6.92 assists per game. Defensively, Scott leads with 1.34 blocks at the net, and Hailey Arritola leads the back row with 4.70 digs per set.Â
Â
Northwest's 3-2 win in Caldwell was just the Eagles' seventh win in the 38-match series. Northwest has won three of the last four matches, including the 2019 meeting in Kirkland, 3-1.
Â
Horne led Northwest to the 3-2 win in Caldwell with 15 kills, and Lorenz picked up 16 digs. Austyn Mauzy led the Yotes with 15 kills, while Isabelle Combs racked up 25 digs.
