KIRKLAND – Northwest got the big plays down the stretch and scored its first win in the home opener, 75-71, over Corban Friday.
Â
With the Eagles leading 65-62, Cacoa Chatman came up with a big steal and found Kelvin Omojola for an athletic layup for a 67-62 advantage with 1:14 left in the game. The Warriors never got within two possessions from there.
Â
The contest was close throughout, with NU getting its biggest lead on a pair of Cole Langstraat free throws with 10 seconds left, 73-63.
Â
"That's what conference games are like," said NU Head Coach Jeff Drinkwine. "That intensity level was high. Corban played really well. I think we were at our best in the last four minutes. We handled their pressure better than we had the whole rest of the game."
Â
Five players reached double figures for the Eagles, led by Daniel Sharpe with 17. Chatman added 13, Cesar Sandoval scored 12, and Omojola and Pa'Treon Lee added 10 apiece.
Â
Sandoval finished with a double-double, bringing down 10 rebounds.Â
Â
Chatman and Lee led NU with three assists, and Sharpe swatted away three shots.
Â
"It was good to get what we got from Daniel and Cesar," Drinkwine said. "That was nice to see."
Â
Corban's Kendall Moore led all scorers with 20 points. Mauricio Smith added 10 for the Warriors.
Â
"It's always good to get a win," Drinkwine said. "Now we have to figure out a way to win again tomorrow."
Â
The same two teams meet at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, in Kirkland.
