CALDWELL, Idaho – Seventeenth-ranked College of Idaho took a pair of games from Northwest Friday, despite a pitching gem from freshman
Sydney Maurer.
Â
The Yotes won 11-3 and 1-0.
Â
After NU starting pitcher
Abby Brake exited after one batter in the first game, the Yotes pounced for seven first-inning runs, all but one unearned, for a 7-0 lead.
Â
Northwest scored twice in the fourth.
Jordan Dippel led off with a single and scored on a triple by
Sammi Caron. Caron later scored on a squeeze bunt, laid down by
Jessica Nunes.
Â
CI took an 8-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but the Eagles got that run back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by
Alyssa Maldonado.
Â
The Yotes scored three times in the fifth to end the game.
Â
Northwest had four hits, with Dippel, Caron, Nunes, and
Ashley Oswald collecting one each.
Â
Sydney Maurer held the Yotes to an unearned run on three hits in the second game. The freshman had two strikeouts.
Â
Dippel started the second game with a leadoff single for the only NU hit of the game.
Â
"We responded well in the second game," said NU Head Coach
Pam Fink. "Sydney did a great job of getting a complete game. She gave us an opportunity to win. Our hitters are getting better. We have to keep seeing pitches. We will keep working hard. "
Â
The Eagles and Yotes complete the series with a 10 a.m. (Pacific) doubleheader on Saturday.
