KIRKLAND – Northwest inaugurates the 2021 season with an 11 a.m. match at Whitworth Tuesday in Spokane.
 
The in-state rivalry has only played out twice and, like this year's contest, the previous two were in Spokane. The Pirates and Eagles played to a scoreless draw in 2018 and Whitworth picked up a 3-1 win in 2015.
 
Both teams are opening the season with this matinee contest. The Pirates lost their season openers last spring, 1-0 at home against Pacific Lutheran. The Eagles are 4-5-1 in their last 10 season openers. Northwest beat Multnomah, 5-2, on a neutral field last season to stem a slide of three consecutive opening-day losses. Elliot Misic had a goal and three assists in that win last season.
 
All three of Northwest's All-Cascade Collegiate Conference selections return this season. Misic, Titus Nickson, and Kyle Han were all second-team All-CCC picks last spring.
 
Northwest returns 85 percent of its scoring from last year. Misic led the team last spring with four goals. Benjamin Banks Forder, Han, and Nickson had three apiece. Misic led the team last season with four assists and Tyler Hopp added three.
 
Alexander Thiehofe returns for his third season in goal for the Eagles. Through two seasons, Thiehofe has a 1.316 goals-against average and six shutouts.
 
The Pirates return their top three goal scorers in Dominic Gusman (3 goals), Jose Bautista (2), and Victor Loyola (2). Jonathan Guglilmetti, who shared the team lead of two assists with Gusman, also returns. Bo Broyles is back in goal after allowing 1.78 goals per game last season.
