Eagles, Pioneers Play to 1-1 Draw

PORTLAND – Northwest and Lewis & Clark played to a 1-1 draw Wednesday in a match marred by 37 fouls and five cautions.

The Pioneers scored on a penalty kick by Brecklyn Beighle in the 14th minute for a 1-0 lead that stood for the rest of the first half.

Lewis & Clark got another penalty kick opportunity by Hannah Pylant came up with the save in the 52nd minute.

Claire Jo Diede scored NU's first goal of the season in the 68th minute with Callie Wright provided the assist.

"Again, we started pretty poorly and it took us until the second half to really get going." Said NU Head Coach Bryan Chud. "The game was littered with soft fouls which meant it was stop-and-start a lot and that doesn't favor the way we play. Hannah came in the second half and her pk save was the turning point. We played well from then on, created a lot of chances, The goal was a team goal indicative of what we're capable of, finished off well by Claire. We will build off this result though, and hopefully, it serves as a turning point."

Lewis & Clark had a one-on-one opportunity in overtime, but Pylant proved equal to the task with three minutes left on the clock. Wright tested the LCC keeper with 1:40 left in the first overtime.

The Eagles had 20 shots, including eight by Kayla Soderstrom and five by Wright. Wright, Soderstrom, and Diede put two shots on goal apiece while Olivia Morris and Halley Marschall tested the LCC keeper once each.

Pylant had four saves in 65 minutes for Northwest.

The NU defense limited the Pioneers to nine shots.

The Eagles return to action Wednesday, Sept. 8, with their home opener against Evergreen State at 5 p.m.
