LA GRANDE, Ore. – Unranked Northwest pushed No. 17 Westmont to overtime Saturday but came away on the short end of a 3-2 final.
The Eagles had a 2-1 lead at halftime, but Westmont scored in the second half and won the game in the 94
th minute.
"We came out really strong, and I felt we played really well for 60 minutes before fatigue began to set in," said NU Head Coach
Bryan Chud. "Westmont is a strong team, and they capitalized on our mistakes. I'm proud of the way we played, though, and look forward to going into conference play next weekend."
Kayla Soderstrom delivered a 1-0 NU lead in the seventh minute, playing an assist from
Maya Lewis.
Westmont tied the game in the 22
nd minute, but the Eagles answered 69 seconds later when
Elizabeth Moretti found the ball in a pack of players and put it in the net.
Olivia Morris got the assist.
Westmont tied the game again in the 61
st minute, but NU thwarted nine other second-half shots by the Warriors.
The Eagles posted nine shots, with
Claire Jo Diede launching four. Soderstrom and
Callie Wright had two shots each, and Moretti added one.
Soderstrom and Diede both had two shots on goal, with Wright and Moretti adding one apiece.
Kierstin Patefield had eight saves for the Eagles.
Now 1-3-1, NU opens Cascade Collegiate Conference action next weekend with games at Oregon Tech on Friday and Southern Oregon on Saturday.
