Eagles Get Another Home Shutout

KIRKLAND – Northwest got yet another shutout and added a late goal to get the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings points in a 1-0 win over Carroll on Saturday.

Northwest has not allowed a goal in six home games and only one for the season as the Eagles advanced their record to 8-0-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the CCC.

NU put the clamps on Blair Stapleton, the leading goal scorer in the conference. Stapleton led the Saints with five shots and had two shots on goal, but NU's Hanne Breur was equal to the task. Breur had seven saves and picked up her NAIA-leading ninth shutout.

Still, the game was deadlocked for 85 minutes until Grace Burke headed in a well-placed cross from Kayla Soderstrom for the game winner.

"Today's result was a huge one for us, and I felt on the balance of play that we more than deserved it," said NU Head Coach Bryan Chud. "The first half we especially played well, but we had trouble finding the finish off of all our good play. I am really proud of the fact that we never gave up, and Kayla had a brilliant run and cross to set up Grace who finished it clinically."

The win put the Eagles into a scoring tie with Carroll, which has played one more league game than Northwest.

NU outshot its guests 24-12. Soderstrom had six shots, Gracie VanAssche took five, and Claire Jo Diede had four. Each of those three had three shots on goal. Burke, Colette Liston, and Anna Lau also had shots on goal.

Sarah Conway had a dozen saves for the Saints.

The Eagles are home again next weekend, taking on Bushnell on Friday and Corban on Saturday in a pair of 12:30 p.m. contests–the last home games of the season.
