KIRKLAND – Northwest opens its women's soccer season with a 2 p.m. home game on Friday against Fraser Valley.
Â
Northwest hasn't missed the fall postseason since
Bryan Chud became the head coach. However, NU is 2-4 in season openers in the Chud coaching era. The team has lost its last four season openers, with the last victory coming against Sierra Nevada in 2017.Â
Â
The only additions to last season's roster come in the net this season—freshman
Charlize Gutierrez from Aberdeen and
Hanne Breur from The Netherlands. The Eagles have produced an All-Conference keeper in each of the last three seasons.
Â
The 2021 Cascade Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year and second-team All-CCC pick
Claire Jo Diede is back for her senior season. Diede had seven goals for the Eagles last season.
Â
Kayla Soderstrom shared the team lead with six assists last season as a freshman, matching Diede in that category.
Â
The Eagles have five players using their Covid-19 exemption season this year:
Maggie Gunning,
Olivia Morris,
Donnya Kvinge,
Elizabeth Moretti, and
Maya Lewis.
Â
Gunning and Soderstrom return this season after being named honorable mention All-Conference selections a year ago. Gunning, a defender, made 16 starts last season. Soderstrom had three goals and six assists while starting 17 games at forward or midfield.
Â
Fraser Valley was 6-5-2 last season and was strong defensively, allowing 1.08 goals per game. The Cascades were held to 0.92 goals per game. Hannah Gamble led UFV with three goals last season, and Harneet Dardao had four assists to go with two goals.Â
