BILLINGS, MT - Tyler Hopp scored a last-second game winner this afternoon to secure a win for the Northwest University men's soccer team.
After 29 minutes of battle between the Bears and Eagles, a shot on goal by Brayden Corwin was rebounded by Hopp, who put NU on the board with an unassisted, textbook volley.
The first period ended with the Eagles in the lead, 1-0.
NU had the game under control until a hand ball by the Eagles in the box gave the Bears an opportunity to put themselves on the board. Rocky Mountain faced Alexander Thiefhofe in goal with a penalty shot to tie. Thiehofe dove the correct way, but the ball found itself in the top right corner of the net with just under three minutes to go.Â
A tied match called for the Eagle offense to find its fire once again. Nearly 20 seconds after the Bears tied it up, Jacen Stein crossed the ball to Hopp, who slid between two Bear defenders and scored the game-winning goal for NU.Â
Hopp ended with both goals for the Eagles. In goal, Thiehofe collected six saves.
Head Coach Gary McIntosh says, "This was a good win for us. I thought we started out playing really well, and we had control of the game in both halves. We created so many opportunities for good looks at scoring goals, but we just have this inability to put them away right now. The heart of this team is massive, and they have this 'never quit' mentality. It was tough to get the game tied up in the last two minutes, but then to come back in the last minute and find the game winner was great to see. I am proud of the guys."
The action continues on Sunday in College Place, WA, as the Eagles face the Wolves of Walla Walla at 1 pm.
