KIRKLAND, WA - Senior day for eleven Northwest University women's soccer players took place Saturday afternoon during their home match against No. 2 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, Carroll College. The women kept a tight lead for the majority of the match, but a late goal for the Saints tied the match until the final horn.
A corner kick from Gracie VanAssche found Donnya Kvinge right in the center of the box, who headed it in to put the Eagles on the board. NU led 1-0 in the 37th minute.
The Saints searched for a tying goal, but the back line defense led by Halley Marschall made it difficult to find.Â
The Eagles kept the pressure on as well, looking to extend their lead. Carroll was the next to see results, finding the back of the net in the 83rd minute of play.
Stunned by the late goal, the Eagles could not find another in the remaining seven minutes.Â
Despite the tie, the women bumped themselves up to No. 3 in the CCC standings, clinching a playoff berth.
Head Coach April VanAssche says, "Today's game was a well-fought match by both teams! I'm very proud of our team today for how they came together and really played 90 minutes of good soccer. We did a lot of little things that really added up today, and they played with a lot of heart. It was a special day for us to honor our seniors and their families for all the years of dedication and commitment. Northwest University soccer program is better because of each of these girls and the impact they have had on and off the field over the years! Looking forward to the rest of this season with this group!"
The women see the field next in Klamath Falls, OR, on October 29, to match up against Oregon Tech.
The seniors recognized Saturday afternoon include Anna Lau, Brynn Pilkenton, Callie Barnett, Colette Liston, Donnya Kvinge, Elizabeth Moretti, Grace Burke, Gracie VanAssche, Halley Marschall, Montse Youngsman, and Liv Lagerquist.Â
Thank you to our seniors for the way you have exemplified the culture of the women's soccer program and of Northwest University athletics.
