KIRKLAND, WA - The Northwest University women's volleyball team extends its winning streak to five, in a victory over Walla Walla in three sets, 25-22, 25-10, 25-12.
Both teams exchanged the lead throughout the first set. The Wolves led 20-18, but two kills by Kailtyn Mickle out of a timeout tied the set and led to a win at 25-22.
The Wolves earned the first two points of the second set, continuing to show their eagerness for another close frame. After tying at 8-8, 11 consecutive Eagle points put NU ahead at 19-8. The Eagles continued to lead at 21-10. Kills from Delaney Sparks, Kaitlyn Mickle, and Kalli Budge sealed the second set win at 25-10.
The Eagles jumped ahead to start the third set, leading 3-0. Three attack errors and an ace from Masa Spela-Jarc put NU ahead 8-2. The teams exchanged points until three more Wolves' errors gave NU a 16-8 lead. At 23-12, Halsie Keltner made it a one-point game with a kill, followed by a match-ending service ace from Allie Flynn.
Head Coach Steven Bains says, "I couldn't watch that match and not come away impressed with Walla Walla's performance in the first set. They played clean and pressured us from the service line, and we had to battle for every point. Fortunately, we were able to stabilize serve-receive, improve our own first contacts, and make the plays when that set was on the line. In sets two and three, we dialed in our own first contacts, which kept Walla Walla out of system and allowed us to score points and close out the match. It was great to get the win, but we have a quick turnaround and need to focus our attention on tomorrow's opponent, a very tough Lewis-Clark State College squad."
The Eagles continue conference play at home tomorrow against Lewis-Clark State College at 5 pm. Last time the teams met, NU took the match, 3-2.Â
