KIRKLAND, WA - In a thrilling final minute of play, Northwest's
Maya DuChesne sank two free throws to give the Eagles the win over the Knights, 78-77.
After a back and forth first quarter, Warner Pacific led the Eagles by eight going into the second quarter. While Warner Pacific came out strong, Northwest fought back to outscore the Knights 23-17 in the second quarter. The Eagles trailed by two going into half.
NU quickly established a lead in the third quarter and started to create space between the two teams, but the Knights were not going to let the Eagles get too far away. Northwest held the lead by six going into the final ten minutes of play.
Northwest continued to push and maintain a lead in the early minutes of the fourth quarter. With 2:36 remaining in the game, NU led by 10. In a series of costly turnovers and fouls, the Knights were able to take the lead with 33 seconds left. A pair of free throws by Laurie Cren gave Warner Pacific a three-point lead with 16 seconds left.
Grace Harder quickly sank a jump shot and gave the Eagles a fighting chance to win. With six seconds left, Warner Pacific's head coach received his second technical foul of the game, requiring him to exit the court. Grad student
Maya DuChesne made both free throws to push the Eagles past the Knights and give the Eagles the victory.
"Exciting win tonight for our Eagles," said NU Head Coach
Ken Crawford. "Our players have worked so hard. I am glad to see this accomplishment for them. There are definitely rough edges we need to work on–luckily we get to go back on the court tomorrow to continue the work."
Maya DuChesne led the Eagles with 23 points.
Kyrin Baklund brought in 14 points, and
Katie Fleming landed 10.
Kylie Lunday secured 8 rebounds.
The Eagles host the Multnomah Lions tomorrow at 3 p.m.
