SALEM, OR - Northwest opened conference play for the 2024 year on the road at the 3-8 Corban Warriors. In a high-scoring night, the Eagles came up just shy in overtime, falling 91-96.
The Eagles had a season-high six athletes score in double digits tonight in an offensive showcase. From the first whistle, it proved to be a tight game against two evenly matched teams. While the Warriors and Eagles traded buckets, the first quarter came to an end with 20 points each.Â
Northwest gained some momentum in the second quarter and began to stretch its lead. Two three pointers late in the second quarter by Katie Fleming and Maya DuChesne helped NU gain a ten-point lead going into the half.Â
Corban fought its way back in and showed Northwest that the Warriors would not go away quietly. The Warriors took a one-point lead with the final quarter to play. As the fourth quarter progressed, both teams continued to trade baskets. Corban sank two crucial free throws with four seconds left to send the game into overtime.Â
Despite scoring 91 points, a season high for the Eagles, Corban just hung on to escape Northwest.Â
All five starters for the Eagles scored in double digits, with Maya Duchesne leading the pack with 20. Katie Fleming knocked down 18, Kyrin Baklund landed 16, Kylie Lunday scored 11, and Grace Harder brought home 10. Alli VanKooten also saw double digits with 12 points.Â
"This was a heartbreaking loss for the Lady Eagles tonight," said NU Head Coach Ken Crawford. "However, the bright side is that it was one of our best offensive efforts of the year. We played hard the whole time. We are looking forward to getting a chance to go against Bushnell tomorrow."
Northwest closes out this road trip at Bushnell tomorrow at 3 p.m.
