Kirkland, WA - The Northwest women's soccer team earned a draw against Southern Oregon, 1-1, on Friday.
The rain was heavy and so was the mud. Players were sliding all over the place, making play near impossible to decipher. Despite the elements, both teams had a fire that burned bright.
Even with the rain and mud, the Raiders were the faster and stronger team at the start, dominating play with sharp passes and quick turns. However, the Eagles were able to keep the Raiders at bay for the majority of the first half with good defense and some luck.
The second half was even more muddy as the torrential rains beat down on the field and players. Both teams played fiercely, but ultimately, the Raiders would break through with a 56th-minute goal that bounced off of Katie Snow and right in front of midfielder Cora Thorndike. The Eagles kept the pressure up and were ultimately rewarded with an 80th minute goal from Kaelynn Teagle off a collision.
"Today was a crazy game with the weather," exclaimed Head Coach April VanAssche. "I am proud of my girls for sticking with it and finding a way to get that goal at the end of the game to at least get us a tie for today! Lots of girls left everything they had out there on that field and did a great job! Looking forward to tomorrow for our last regular season conference game."
