Olympia, WA - The Northwest men's basketball team could not overcome Evergreen State College as the Eagles fell 85-79.
Going into Tuesday night, the Geoducks were winless and needed to answer after their losses on the weekend. Meanwhile the Eagles were feeling good about getting their first win of the season against Walla Walla. However it was not meant to be for Northwest. Both teams started the game nearly even in shots in the first half, with the Eagles shooting 14-34 and 5-12 in threes, whereas the Geoducks shot 14-37 and 6-12 in threes. The biggest difference though lied in the free throws. The Geoducks went perfect, drilling all six of their free throws whereas the Eagles only made four out of seven. The Geoducks had the lead going into the half 40-37.
While the Eagles were able to put up 42 points in the second quarter, it wasn't enough to catch up to the Geoducks, and again the shots were similar. The Eagles shot 16-32 and went 5-13 on their three pointers while the Geoducks made 16-28 and 5-8 in threes. But again, the difference came down in the free throws. The Geoducks went 8-12 while the Eagles only went 5-11. With additional timely steals and clinical rebounds, the Geoducks were able to take away the game and get their first win of the season.
Nash Wobrock led the Eagles with a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Tay Aubry-Thomas followed up with 14 points.
"After a strong weekend of doing the little things to win basketball games we got away from that tonight," said Head Coach Rick Skeen. "We were sloppy with the ball, having more turnovers tonight than in two games this weekend. Our defensive effort and focus was lacking as we could not stop Evergreen on the defensive end. We also continue to struggle from the free throw line. We will get back to work to clean those areas up."
