Great Falls, MT - The Northwest men's basketball team took a hard fight to the University of Providence but fell just short, 76-72.
The Eagles traveled to Montana for the weekend, and the first stop was the Argos, a team going into this match riding a three-game win streak after starting the season 0-4. The Eagles looked to respond after a sluggish performance against the Geoducks on Tuesday.
There were a few momentum swings in the first half, but the Eagles had the edge going into the second half. Hitting 6-15 in threes was enough for the Eagles to outscore the Argos who hit 4-13 in threes. Both teams were excellent on the free throw line, with the Eagles drilling 6-7 and 7-8 for the Argos.
The second half was geared more towards the Argos as they hit 13-26, 5-11 in threes, and netted 4-7 of their free throws. The Eagles struggled on offense. They only shot 11-29 and only hit 4-12 of their threes. The Eagles were able to keep the game close for the last three minutes by tying it 72-72; however, the Argos dug deep with a timely three pointer from Mike Wright Jr. and were able to pull away with the win.
Nash Wobrock continued to lead the team offensively with 18 points, and Trent Williams and Filip Mugosa both tallied 11 points. Manuel Zapater also had an impressive game as well in the paint with 12 rebounds.
"Our guys gave a great effort today," said Head Coach Rick Skeen. "We really guarded against an explosive offensive team. We put ourselves in a position to beat a good team on the road but came up just a play or two short."
