Depleted Eagles Lose Sixth Straight

Kirkland, WA - The Northwest men's basketball team could not keep up with Eastern Oregon 86-57.

Over break, the Eagles lost three players due to injury and ineligibility: Gonzalo Basterrechea, Vojislav Spalevic, and Milton Burnett. Basterrechea suffered a groin injury and decided to return to Spain and Spalevic returned home due to ineligibility, and Burnett chose to hang up his shoes after being cleared from injury.

Among other injuries and ineligibilities the team has suffered over the months, this leaves Rick Skeen's men deprived of talent and unable to gain traction with the rest of the conference.

These losses were felt in this game against the Mountaineers, who dominated on offense. The Mountaineers shot for 53.3%, converted half of their threes and drilled 78.6% of their free throws. On top of collecting 31 rebounds, the Eagles simply could not keep up.

The Eagles did have a strong first half, shooting 48.3% of their shots and 33% of their threes, keeping the game within reach of 11 points at the end of the half. However the wheels fell off in the second. The Eagles only shot for 25% and only made 18.2% of their threes.

Trent Williams led the team in points on the night with 11 points while Manuel Zapater and Caleb Whalen both came up with 10 points.

"We are working hard to focus on controlling the controllables," Skeen says. "Playing hard, getting on the floor for loose balls, blocking out, staging locked in to the moment.   We can and will continue to get better in these areas."
