KIRKLAND, WA - The Northwest women's basketball team could not overcome Bushnell's defense as they fall, 70-59.
Â
The Eagles were on cloud nine after a tremendous comeback against Corban and were feeling confident going into the contest. The Beacons, on the other hand, were staring down a four-game losing streak coming into Sunday night with a loss against the Geoducks the night before.Â
Â
There was a lot more offense than the score testifies. Both teams were busy in their offensive zones with the Eagles tallying 65 shots, whereas the Beacons shot 59. However, the Beacons were far more clinical in their efforts. Splashing 25 of 59, the Beacons held out for 43.1% of shots, while the Eagles only scored on 19 shots. This also showed the defensive prowess of the Beacons with timely blocks and rebounds in the paint.Â
Â
The Eagles managed to take the lead, thanks to a three-pointer by Kimberly Carrada Sanchez with nine minutes left in the game, but the Beacons clamped down and stifled the Eagles' relentless attack. With some amazing individual efforts throughout, the Beacons were able to snuff out the Eagles' light to take the win.Â
Â
Carrada Sanchez led the team in points with 18, while Ellie De Waard recorded another double-double match with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Ellis Mastel of the Beacons recorded a double-double as well, tallying 15 points and 13 rebounds.Â
Â
"I think things seemed really even between both squads," said Head Coach Randall Edens. "Although at their place, we had a lead a little earlier in the game, but once again with them in the fourth quarter, those last few minutes, we just couldn't get a shot to go down. I felt with the combination of the two games and the amount of energy exerted last night, we may have struggled with shooting here in the late fourth as a result. Frankly, when you only shoot 29% in general, that is going to be tough to overcome.
Â
"But we made some huge strides this weekend. We would have loved to have gotten a win today to help our cause and make a playoff push here with just a week to go.
Â
"What's been fun, though, is these have been meaningful games for where we want to get to eventually and especially here in year one, this will just help us down the road."
