LA GRANDE, OR - The Northwest women's basketball team fell early to Eastern Oregon's machine, losing 64-49.
The Eagles had a strong performance against Bushnell on Sunday, but could not capitalize in the end with a second-half fourth quarter loss. The Mountaineers entered this game with strong back-to-back wins against Multnomah and Warner Pac and an invitation to the playoffs.
The Eagles lost this game early on, shooting under 30% and just 26.1% of their threes. The Mountaineers were far more accurate in their executions. Accumulating a 34-point lead over the Eagles late in the third quarter, the Mountaineers dominated both sides of the ball in the first three quarters.
However the fourth quarter was a different story. The Eagles defense shut down anything the Mountaineers attempted, only allowing one free throw point in the quarter. The Eagles managed 16 total points, but the hole they dug themselves in was too big to surmount and the Mountaineers avoided the fourth quarter scare.
Kaleah Medeiros and Saydee Anderson both shared the scoring leaders for the Eagles, putting up 12 points while Ellie De Waard followed with nine points. Kelsie Siegner of the Mountaineers recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
"Eastern Oregon shot the lights out from deep range from the tip," said Assistant Head Coach Kevin Thompson. "We were put in a spot where we had to play from behind which changed the way the game flowed. Early foul trouble also set us back. But the ladies played resiliently and made a strong comeback in the second half. We trailed at one point 63-33 and finished on a 16-1 run by playing aggressive defense and chasing every rebound. We need to carry that late game momentum into tomorrow's game with the College of Idaho."
