Fonseca Earns CCC Champion of Character Award

KIRKLAND, Wash. — Northwest University men's soccer student-athlete João Lucas Fonseca has been named the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Champion of Character, recognizing his exceptional leadership, service, and commitment to positively impacting those around him.

A graduate student pursuing a master's degree in Business Administration, Fonseca has become a familiar face across Northwest Athletics through his involvement both on and off the field. Originally from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, he has consistently invested in the Northwest community, using his platform as a student-athlete to serve others and build meaningful relationships.

Throughout his time at Northwest, Fonseca has taken an active role in student-athlete leadership initiatives while helping cultivate a supportive environment within the athletic department. His influence extends beyond competition, as he has dedicated significant time to mentoring fellow students and encouraging personal growth among his peers.

Among his many contributions, Fonseca has helped organize preseason Bible studies for student-athletes, creating opportunities for fellowship and connection across multiple athletic programs. His commitment to serving others has also been evident through volunteer work with Fellowship of Christian Athletes and SAMBICA, where he has supported youth and families throughout the local community.

Fonseca's passion for faith and service reaches beyond campus as well. He is actively involved with several Christian organizations, including Young Life College, the Navigators at the University of Washington, and Run with Christ, a faith-based running community.

In addition to his athletic, academic, and volunteer commitments, Fonseca has worked within Northwest University's dining services and athletics department, demonstrating a strong work ethic and willingness to serve wherever needed.

The Champion of Character honor is awarded to student-athletes who exemplify the NAIA's core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. Fonseca's recognition reflects the impact he has made throughout his collegiate career and the example he continues to set for teammates, classmates, and the broader Northwest community.

"João has been a superb leader for our program," said Northwest Head Men's Soccer Coach Gary McIntosh. "As captain of the soccer team, he consistently demonstrated what it means to be a true team leader. João is the kind of person who puts others first and himself last. He cares deeply for his friends, teammates, and everyone around him, always looking for ways to support and encourage others.

"João's love for the Lord shines through in everything he does. His character, integrity, humility, and servant-hearted leadership make a lasting impact on those around him. He truly embodies the spirit of the Champions of Character Award—not just in what he says, but in how he lives each day. It has been an honor and privilege to coach João."

Northwest Athletics is proud to celebrate Fonseca and the lasting influence he has had on campus. His dedication to serving others, leading with humility, and investing in those around him embodies the mission and values of Northwest University Athletics.
