Box Score KAMPLOOPS, BC — The Thompson Rivers WolfPack kicked off a two game tournament with an 89-76 win over visiting Northwest University tonight. TRU improved to 4-1 while NU lost their preseason opener and fell to 0-1.
With the score tied 12-12 in the first quarter, TRU would go on a 9-1 run capped off by a jumper by Will Ondrik. As the buzzer sounded for the first quarter, Northwest would trail the WolfPack, 26-15.
In the second quarter, Northwest would close the gap to three, 30-27 on two free throws and a 3-pointer by C.J. Carter. But, Thompson Rivers would answer with a 9-1 run to TRU stretch their lead to 11, 39-28 with 2:51 left in the period. Michael Greene's free-throw with 1:37 left on the clock would end the scoring for the half with the Eagle down 45-30.
Thompson Rivers would continue to lead in the third quarter and a three point play by TRU's Ta'Quan Zimmerman would stretch the WolfPack lead to 18, 57-39, with 5:31 remaining in the period. NU would not go away easily and would chip away at the TRU lead. A 7-0 run with 1:23 to go would close the gap to 66-57 as the quarter would end.
The Eagles would make a late run and would cut TRU's 81-69 lead to 7, 81-74 and Michael Greene would hit a trey. But that would be the closest NU would come as the WolfPack would hold on and go 6 for 6 from the free throw line to close out the game.
Northwest U's Michael Greene would lead all scorers with 34 points and 8 rebounds. C.J. Carter would score 15 points and
Nemanja Grujicic would register a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. NU would only shoot 35% for the game and 28% (8-28) from the 3-point line. NU forced 23 TRU turnovers while the Eagles had 19.
Reese Pribilsky led Thomson Rivers with 18 points shooting 50% on the night. Tallon Milne chipped in with 15 points while Ta'Quan Zimmerman and Will Ondrik each had 13 points. TRU shot 52% for the night, 39% from beyond the 3-point line. The WolfPack out rebounded NU 44-39.
Northwest will play UBC Okanagan tomorrow at 2 p.m.
