Carter's 31 Helps Propel Northwest in Overtime Victory

C.J. Carter scored a game high 31 in the Eagle overtime win
Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University's C.J. Carter came off the bench to score a game high 31 points and help lift the Eagles to a 93-84 overtime win over Eastern Oregon on the second night of Cascade Conference play.

The teams battled in the first half with Eastern Oregon maintaining a slim lead for the first 15 minutes of the period, but with 5:17 left in the half, C.J. Carter would score on a three point play to cut EOu's lead to one, 28-27. It would be Carter again with a jumper with 4:07 to go to give Northwest their first lead of the half 29-28. EOU's Tony Eackles would hit 2 free throws at the 2 minute mark to knot the score at 31-31. A jumper by Craig Tucker and a dunk by Trevor Phillips would stretch the Mountie lead to 5, 36-31, bur NU would come back with another driving layin by C.J. Carter and Michael Greene would also get to the rim for a score with 13 seconds to go to give EOU a slim, 36-35 lead at the half.

The second half would be even tighter than the first as it would see 4 ties and 9 lead changes. Michael Greene would put NU up 3, 67-64 with 1:21 to go in the game, Eackles would answer with a drive to the basket to make it a one point ball game, 67-66. C.J. Carter would come back with a drive of his own and two free throws by Ryan McIntosh would increase the NU lead to 71-66 with 30 seconds on the clock. Eackles would steal the ball and score with 17 ticks left and he would steal the ball again and hit his jumper with 4 seconds to go and hit a jumper right in front of the EOU bench to tie the game at 71-71 and send it into overtime.

Tommy Jordan would hit two free throws to put NU up 82-76 with 45 seconds remaining in the extra period. After an EOU turnover, Tony Eackles would be called for a technical foul and Jordan would sink both shots to make it 84-76 with 36 seconds left. The Eagles would hit 8 of 8 free throws, 6 of them by Jordan to seal the victory.

In addition to Carter's game high 31, Northwest U. (10-2, 2-0 CCC) got 20 points from Michael Russo and 19 from Michael Greene. Tommy Jordan scored 15 hitting 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Nu would make 92% of their free throws going 22 for 24 from the line. Carter hit 59% of his shots going 13-22 for the night and added 4 assists.

Tony Eackles led Eastern Oregon (9-2, 1-1 CCC) with 28 points and added 9 rebounds. Trevor Phillips added 16 while teammates Kelvin Johanson and Craig Tucker each scored 12 for the Mountaineers who shot 45% for the game. Eastern Oregon was strong on the boards with a 44-33 edge in rebounding including 14 offensive rebounds.

"After Eackles made that tough three pointer to tie the game, our guys could have given in, but they didn't," commented John Van Dyke, NU head coach. "They bounced back strong in the overtime, showed poise and made clutch shots and free throws to earn the win. C.J. Carter really gave us a lift off the bench tonight. This is a season in which maintaining your home court advantage will be critical in the conference."
