Eagles Hold On to Drop Knights in Overtime

Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. - Northwest University held on to edge Warner Pacific in overtime, 71-70, in CCC play. The game came down to the final possessiion by Warner Pacific as they would fall short of getting the game winning basket.
 
The game between the Eagles and Knights would prove to be a tight one the entire night as the game would see 13 ties and 13 lead changes. Freshman Dak Shagren would hit a trey to give NU a 14-10 lead 8 minutes into the game. That lead would be short-lived as Sean Gaines would tip in his own miss to give Warner Pacific a narrow lead that the Knights would maintain until the 3:22 mark when Tommy Jordan's jumper would tie the score at 27. But, a 7-0 run by WPC capped off by Ryan Parks' three and a Gaines' lay-in would give WPC a 34-27 lead at the half.
 
Warner Pacific would hold onto a slim lead in the second half, but Northwest would tie the score with 11:36 remaining to make it a 50-50 game. The game would then swing back and forth with ties and lead changes. Michael Russo would give NU a 65-64 lead with 1:32 with his 15 foot jumper at the free throw line. Neither team would muster a score until Doug Thomas would go to the free throw line with 6 seconds remaining and make one of two to tie the game. NU would call a quick timeout and on the next possession, Michael Russo's 20 footer from the right side just rimmed out as the buzzer sounded.
 
In the extra period, Michael Moreland would hit a long trey from the right side to give Warner Pacific a 70-67 lead with 2 minutes to go. Two free throws by Ryan McIntosh and Russo would give the Eagles the 71-70 lead with 25 seconds left on the clock. Warner Pacific had the final possession with 10 seconds on the clock and called a timeout. With time running down the ball was batted from the key out near half court where NU's Ryan McIntosh was able to bat the ball away on Doug Thomas' shot attempt.
 
Michael Russo led Northwest U (18-9, 9-7 CCC) with 18 points and Nemanja Grujicic scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Senior Ryan McIntosh contributed 13 points.
 
Sean Gaines led Warner Pacific (14-13, 8-7 CCC) with a game high 23 points and 7 rebounds. Ryan Parks dropped in 16 hitting 4 of 6 from the 3-point line. Michael Hall added 10 points. WPC shot 43% for the night.

"Tonight was a battle between two teams who refused to lose," commented John Van Dyke. "I'm proud of the way our guys never quit and kept competing all night long. It was a true team win. I'm also happy for our seniors who were able to get a victory on their final regular season game at home in front of their families and a great crowd."
