Eagles Split with EOU in CCC Opener

Box Score REDMOND, Wash. – Northwest University and Eastern Oregon University split a pair of games today with EOU winning the first, 6-4, and NU holding on for an 8-7 win in the second game of the conference opener for both teams. The game was moved to Hartman Park in Redmond, 8 miles away, due to the bad field playing conditions in Kirkland.
 
Game 1 – Eastern Oregon went up early as they would go 2-0 in the top of the first as Britnee Carmen-Rice hit a 2 run home run to center field scoring Cassie Wendt. EOU put two more runs on the scoreboard in the 3rd inning as Katie Martell singled in Mariebeth Watanabe and Cassie Wendt to put the Moutaineers up 4-0. Northwest would get one run across in the bottom of the 4th as Ricki Tacdol would double to center and would score on Lizzy Reimer's double. EOU would come back with one run in their half of the 5th inning on a solo home run by Stephanie Maestretti to center. Katelin Lewis would lead off the bottom of the 5th for Northwest and would score on Sarah Payne's single.
 
The Eagles would make things interesting in the bottom of the 7th scoring twice, but the game with two Eagles left on base as Lindsey Walchli would earn the win for Eastern Oregon.
 
Northwest U (0-7, 0-1 CCC) pounded out 12 hits with Mallory Tacdol going 2 for 4 with one RBI. Katelin Lewis would go 2 for 3 and scored once for the Eagles. Kelli Peckham went the distance for the Eagles and took the loss giving up 7 hits.
 
Britnee Carmen-Rice went 1 for 4 for Eastern Oregon (4-1, 1-0 CCC) with two RBIs. Katie Martell also had 2 RBIs batting 1 for 3 for the game. Lindsey Walchli gave up 12 hits, but only 4 runs as she struck out 6 to get the win for the Mountaineers.
 
Game 2 – A big, 6 run first inning would play a major part in Northwest U's 8-7 win as Eastern Oregon's come back would fall short. Katelyn Riedinger would score on a single to left by Sarah Payne. Mallory Tacdol would single scoring Payne. Ricki Tacdol and Mallory Tacdol would both score on a double by Kierston Perry. NU's Katelin Lewis would end the scoring for Northwest with her two run single to left which scored Perry and Lexie Robbins.
 
EOU would slowly chip away at the Eagle lead as they would score 2 runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. They would tie the game (7-7) in the top after three straight doubles by Lili Smith, Mariebeth Watanabe, and JoElla Smith and Cassis Wendt. Wendt's double to left would score Smith and Watanabe. Cassie Went scored on a wild pitch to end the scoring for EOU.
 
Northwest would get the game winner as Sarah Payne would get on base following an EOU error. Ricki Tacdol would single to left field and sister Mallory Tacdol would knock in the winning run with a single to center scoring Payne. The Eagles would hold Eastern Oregon scoreless the remaining three innings to earn their first win of the season.
 
Kierston Perry led Northwest (1-7, 1-1 CCC) going 2 for with 3 RBIs. Mallory Tacdol went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and Katelin Lewis knocked in 2 runs going 1 for 4 for the game. Kelli Peckham got the win in relief going 4 innings, giving up 4 hits and holding EOU scoreless.
 
Eastern Oregon's (4-2, 1-1 CCC) Stephanie Maestretti went 3 for 4 and had 2 RBIs. JoElla Smith went 3 for 3 and batted in a run for the Mounties and Mariebeth Watanabe went 2 for 5 and had one RBI. Lily Smith took the loss for EOU after relieving Lindsey Walchli and giving up 3 runs on 5 hits.
 
"I was pleased with the way we were hitting today," said John Bacon, NU head coach. "We have been working on our approach at the plate and it's paying off."
 
The two teams continue CCC play tomorrow as Northwest hosts the College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon travels to Portland to play Concordia.
