Beacons Edge Eagles in Two Tight Contests

NU's Janey Ganta connects for a solo home run in game one.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KIRKLAND, Wash. – Pitching ruled the day as Northwest Christian took two close pitching duels, 2-1 and 2-0, from Northwest U in Cascade Conference play this afternoon at Everest Park.

Game 1 – All the scoring took place in the 7th inning as the Beacons edged the Eagles 2-1 in the first game of the doubleheader. NCU's Chelsea Hannon came up with a clutch 2-run home run in the top of the 7th inning as the teams battled to a scoreless tie in the previous six. Hannon's home run drove in Ally Mittleider who had singled to right to get on base. Northwest U rallied in the bottom of the 7th as Janey Ganta hit a solo home run over the center field fence to make it a 2-1 ball game. Lizzy Reimer then doubled to left, but two Eagles would fly out to end the rally and the game.

Both teams had scoring opportunities with the bases loaded, but neither team would score. NCU loaded them up in the top of the 3rd on three hits, but failed to bring a runner home and Northwest U had the bases packed in the bottom of the 6th with no outs and came up scoreless.

Bre Johnson picked up the win for NCU going the distance and allowing only 4 NU hits and issuing only one base on balls. The Eagles' Kelli Peckham gave a strong effort going 7 innings, giving up 9 hits, striking out 4 and giving up the round tripper by Hannon.

Lizzy Reimer went 2 for 3 for Northwest U and Janey Ganta was 1 for 2 with the HR. NCU was led by Gabby Stover who went 3 for 3 on the day and Chelsea Hannon, 1 for 2, with the big home run. Laynee Bevans was 2 for 4 for the Beacons.

Game 2 – NCU took the next game, 2-0 and the second game proved to be equally as close as neither team could put a run across home plate in the first 4 innings. In the top of the 5th, Janieve Boyles went two solid innings yielding no hits and faced 8 batters. She was forced to leave in the top of the 3rd when she was injured sliding back into first base after Chelsea Hannon lined into a double play. Katie Walker came in to relive Boyles and pitched 5 scoreless innings, holding Northwest U to 3 hits and without a score while facing 18 Eagles batters.

Northwest Christian (7-20, 5-10 CCC) scored their two runs in the top of the 5th, scoring two unearned runs on a base hit and two NU errors. Ally Mittleider scored on an NU miscue and Chelsea Hannon scored on Laynee Bevans' single  to right. Mittleider had advanced to third base on an NU error.

Northwest U's (1-21, 1-14 CCC) Kierston Perry went 7 innings and pitched a 4-hitter with no walks. Sarah Payne, Janey Ganta and Kierston Perry had the base hits for the Eagles.

Gabby Stover went 2 for 3 for NCU while teammate Laynee Bevans went 1 for 4 with a RBI. Boyles went 1 for 1 before leaving the game.

"We pitched well today and had some great defensive plays," said NU head coach, John Bacon. "We are confident in our process and are patiently building toward a goal. I am proud of our young ladies and how they continue to work to improve each and every day."
