No. 11 SOU Edges Eagles

Nemanja Grujicic led the Eagles with 22 points tonight
Box Score ASHLAND, Ore. – Freshman Ben DeSaulnier came off the bench and scored a career-high 22 points as the 11th-ranked Southern Oregon topped Northwest University 84-73 on Saturday night at Riehm Arena.

The Eagles got off to a good start in the first half as they bolted out to a 17-8 lead capped off by a Cody Shackett 3-pointer at 10:42. The No. 11 Raiders would slowly chip away at the NU lead and Ben DeSaulnier's driving lay-up with 6:52 to go in the half would tie the score at 18-18. The game would tighten and would be tied in the next four minutes of play until SOU's Jordan West would get to the basket to put the Raiders up 29-27 with 2:10 left in the half. Eric Thompson's jumper would end the scoring for the half as SOU would take a 33-29 lead at the break.

Southern Oregon would outscore Northwest U 14-8 to start the second half to build a nine point, 47-38 lead, but a 9-2 Eagle run would close the score to 49-47 after Cody Shackett's driving lay-up with 11:28 to go in the game.  SOU would be able to maintain the lead the remainder of the game as they would improve to 16-3 on the season.

Senior Nemanja Grujicic led Northwest U (12-7, 2-5 CCC) with a team high 22 points. Dak Shagren contributed 18 points hitting 50 percent of his shots (7-14). C.J. Carter and Cody Shackett both added 11 points for the Eagles as they shot 54 percent for the game.  Thomas Jordan tied for game honors with 9 assists.

In addition to DeSaulnier's 22, Southern Oregon (16-3, 6-2 CCC) got 15 points from Tim Weber, 13 from Eric Thompson and 12 points from Jordan West. SOU edged NU in rebounding with a 29-23 margin. The Raiders shot 57 percent for the night, 50 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.

"Our guys gave a good effort against a very good and ranked Southern Oregon team," said NU head coach, John Van Dyke. "They showed resiliency coming back from last night's loss at OIT and played hard throughout the game. We just came up a bit short in the score, but not in our effort."
