Northwest U Falls to No. 14 Cavaliers

Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. - Six Cavaliers scored in double figures as No. 14 Concordia defeated Northwest University 75-66, tonight in Cascade Conference play. Concordia overcame a 38-35 halftime deficit for their 16th win of the season.
 
In a tight first half, Northwest U would lead through the middle stages of the period as a Cody Shackett 3-pointer and Nemanja Grujicic lay-up would give NU a 23-14 at the 11:36 mark. Concordia would remain patient and chip away at the Eagle lead until Thomas Pierce would tie the score at 26-26 with 6:01 left in the half. CU would take a 27-26 lead, but Northwest U would go on a 10-2 run to lead 36-29 at the two minute mark. After Tyler Velasquez's trey would cut the NU lead to one, 36-35, Marko Nikolic would squeeze in an offensive tip-in right before the buzzer to make it 38-35 at break.
 
Concordia would extend the court with defensive pressure in the second half and force numerous Northwest U turnovers turning a 40-35 deficit into a 51-43 lead as Thomas Pierce would hit a jumper after 5 Eagle turnovers with 13:52 to go. Another NU turnover would lead to a Tyler Velasquez steal and lay-up as Concordia would lead by ten, 55-45, with 9:29 left on the clock. Northwest would cut the Cav lead to six, but that would be the closest they would come as Concordia would hit 9 of 12 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
 
Northwest U (12-9, 2-7 CCC) was led by Dak Shagren's 16 points with C.J. Carter scoring 14. Nemanja Grujicic and Marko Nikolic each scored 11 for the Eagles. NU lost the battle for rebounds as CU had a 39-32 edge. NU committed 19 turnovers for the contest.
Tyler Velasquez led Concordia with 22 points. Thomas Pierce had 12 with Esvan Middleton, Justyn Searle, and Anthony Holton each scoring 10 for the Cavs. Davis Nuaimi dropped in 10 for CU which shot 50 percent for the night.
 
"We didn't take care of the ball very well tonight and you can't do that against a good team like Concordia," said NU head coach, John Van Dyke. "We'll learn from this experience and continue to work hard each day in practice to improve."
