Evergreen Ends Streak in Victory Over Eagles

Ben Tucakovic had a game high 16 rebounds
Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Evergreen State College used 47 percent shooting and defense to hand Northwest University a 79-71, conference opening loss tonight. With the win, Evergreen ended a 40-game conference road losing streak dating back to January 2011.

Alix Hernandez hit 9 of 16 shots on his way to a team leading 21 point night while adding 6 assists. Post, Danny Powell came up big with a double-double: 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Geoducks.

Evergreen took an early 18-9 lead as they would hit 50 percent of the shots in the first half (15-30) while their defense would hold Northwest U to 31 percent, managing just six points in the first ten minutes of the game. Two straight Evergreen lay-ins would grow their lead to 33-17 with 3:58 to go in the half. A 7-0  run by the Geoducks to end the half would give them a 42-25 halftime lead.

The Geoducks would hold their biggest lead of the game, 21 points (46-25), after an Alix Hernandez driving lay-in to the rim. But, a run by Northwest U with 11:56 to go would cut the TESC lead to six, 53-47, with 9:27 to go in the game. That would be short lived however, as Evergreen's Frankie Johnson would hit a jumper and Hernandez would drill a 3-pointer to get the Geoduck lead back up to 11, 58-47. Evergreen would hold the Eagles at bay the remainder of the way not allowing NU to get closer than 7 points as Frankie Johnson's free throw with 7 seconds remaining would close out the scoring as Evergreen would post the victory.

Tomas Ogbaslassie led the way for Northwest U (4-5, 0-1 CCC) with a team high 18 points. Dak Shagren and Michael Dupree would each add 16 points and Ben Tucakovic would pull down a game high 16 rebounds. NU shot 36 percent (24-66) from the field and 29 percent from the 3-point line.

In addition to Hernandez's 21 and Powell's 18 points, Brock Otis added 16 points for Evergreen (3-4, 1-0 CC) and Jarrick Mitchell contributed 13 points. Evergreen out rebounded Northwest U, 45-35, with 10 offensive rebounds.

"We struggled to get our shots to fall tonight, but credit Evergreen's defense for making it tough on us," commented John Van Dyke. "We have to become more consistent in our play, both on offense and defense and get back to being the good scoring team we can be on offense. I have confidence our guys are willing to work hard to get us on the right track."
