No. 17 Knights Foil Eagles Comeback

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – No. 17 Warner Pacific held off a Northwest U comeback bid to defeat the Eagles, 64-57 tonight in Cascade Conference play.  NU outscored the Knights 37-36 in the second half but it wouldn't be enough to overtake the Knights.

It looked like it might be an easy win for the Knights as they would break out to a 23-8 lead in the first eleven minutes of the game. But, Northwest U would patiently and slowly chip away at the WPC lead and Dak Shagren's driving lay-up with three seconds left in the half would close the game to eight, 28-20, as the halftime buzzer would sound.

A lay-up by Nemanja Grujicic and 3-pointer by Thomas Jordan to start the half would make it a three point, 28-25 game one minute into the period. The Knight's would go on a 6-0 run with Earl Jones capping it off with his 3-pointer to push the WPC lead to 34-25 at the 14:23 mark. The Eagles would take a 38-37 lead on a trey by Thomas Jordan with 9:06 remaining, but WPC would come right back with a Coleton Tarr jumper to regain the lead which they would maintain the remainder of the game. Nemanja Grujicic would cut the WPC lead to just two, 56-54, with 1:21 to go, but once again, the Knights would hold off the Eagles as they would outscore NU 8-3 down the stretch for the victory.

C.J. Carter led Northwest U (16-12, 5-11 CCC) with a team high 15 points with Dak Shagren and Nemanja Grujicic each scoring 13 points. NU shot 50 percent in the second half for a 38 percent average for the game.

Guard Ryan Parks led the way for Warner Pacific (22-6, 12-4 CCC) with 17 points including five 3-pointers. Earl Jones chipped in 13 and Doug Thomas scored 12 for the Knights who shot 46 percent for the game.

Northwest U returns home to host Eastern Oregon and the College of Idaho in their final, regular season games next weekend.
