Eagles and Mountaineers Split in La Grande

The Eagles huddle in the circle in game one in La Grande today
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA GRANDE, Ore. – Another big inning in the second game of a doubleheader, earned Northwest University a split with Eastern Oregon today. Eastern Oregon's Lindsey Walchli threw a four hitter as EOU shut out Northwest U, 2-0, in the first game. NU came from behind in the second game for a 5-4 Cascade Conference victory.

Game 1 – Walchli was tough to hit in the first game as she scattered the Eagles four hits as NU left five runners stranded on base.
Northwest U had an opportunity to score some runs in the 2nd inning loading the bases with two outs, but could not bring anyone home. NU would get runners on base in the 6th and 7th innings, but again would not be able to capitalize with Walchli in the circle. She struck out nine while only walking one Eagle.

EOU would get their runs in the 3rd and 4th innings when Shelby Baertsch hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 3rd with two outs and in the 4th inning, the Mounties put together three base hits to bring in CeCe Pratt who led off the inning with a single.

Kelli Peckham went the distance for NU (6-9, 2-5 CCC) with another solid outing giving up seven hits and striking out seven EOU batters. Katelyn Riedinger, Alyssa Gonzalez, Darian Godfrey and Bethany Bay had the hits for the Eagles with all going 1 for 3 from the plate.

Game 2 – It looked as though EOU would stymie the Eagle bats again in the second game as Lindsey Walchli would pitch back-to-back games for the Mountaineers. NU would manage just two hits in the first four innings as EOU would take a 3-1 lead going into the top of the 5th inning.

Katelyn Riedinger had one of the Eagles' two hits with a solo home run down the left field line in the 3rd inning to cut the Eastern Oregon lead to two runs.

The Eagles bats would finally catch fire in the big 5th inning. Mikayla Scoggins led off with an infield single followed by a Katelin Lewis walk. Savannah Rush singled to left field, but Lewis was tagged out at second. Lexie Robbins got on base with a bunt and Katelyn Riedinger followed that with a clutch single to right, scoring Scoggins from third. Rush scored on a sacrifice fly by Ricki Tacdol and pinch hitter, Janey Ganta singled up the middle driving in Riedinger and Robbins. Four runs on four hits giving NU the 5-3 lead.

EOU got one run back in their half of the 5th on an infield single to close the gap to 5-4. It looked like the Eagles might get some insurance in the 6th when Darian Godfrey and Makayla Scoggins led off with singles, but three straight outs would put a cap to any more runs.

Hannah Yelas would put the Mounties down 1,2,3 in the 6th and with two on in the bottom of the 7th and one out, Kelli Peckham would come in to relieve Yelas in the circle and get the final two outs for the win. Courtney Gain saved a run from scoring, throwing out Cassie Wendt from right field as Wendt attempted to score from second base after Gracie Flyg's single.

Yelas picked up the win in relief of Kierston Perry who went 2 2/3 innings. Yelas pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up 5 hits, one run and no walks.  Kelli Peckham earned the save with her timely pitching in the 7th.

Katelyn Riedinger led the Eagles (7-9, 3-5 CCC) going 2 for 3, scoring two runs and batting in two RBI's. Janey Ganta came in to go 1 for 2 and had two big RBI's and Alyssa Gonzalez went 1 for 2.

Eastern Oregon was led by Gracie Flyg's 3 for 4 day including one RBI and scoring two runs. Cassie Wendt was 2 for 3 for the Mountaineers. Walchli takes the loss in the circle for EOU.

"Our bats were a little late, not coming out until the second game, but we did a great job stringing hits together and moving base runners," said Mallory Tacdol, Eagle head coach. "Our pitchers are doing a good job coming in for one another in difficult situations. Overall our defense was solid which helped prevent runs. Courtney Gain received one ball to play all game and threw a runner out at home from right field--that's a big play as a freshman."

NU returns home and will play Oregon Tech on Monday at 11 a.m. in a re-scheduled game from March 13. The game will be played at Hartman Park in Redmond, Wash.
