KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest Christian held off late inning rallies by Northwest University in both games as they swept a Cascade Conference doubleheader, 4-3 and 2-1 this afternoon at Everest Park.
Game 1 – Northwest Christian got seven innings of no-hit pitching from Jillian Suratt as the Beacons held on for a 4-3 victory. Breanne Johnson came in to relieve Suratt in the 5th inning only to give up three runs on two home runs by the Eagles. NCU coach, Julie Strand, then brought Suratt back in the same inning and she closed out the game for the win.
NCU scored early getting two runs in the first and third innings, taking a 4-0 lead. In the first, Addy Hoskins doubled to left field scoring Jillian Suratt who had singled. Hoskins then scored on Ashlee Cole's single to left giving the Beacons a 2-0 lead. In the third inning, Parker Bonife scored after teammate Chelsea Roberts was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Katelin Downs then scored from third after an NU error, putting NCU up 4-0.
The Eagles scored all three of their runs in the 5th inning when
Katelyn Riedinger led off with a solo home run to left field.
Courtney Cox then walked and
Bethany Bay hit a 1-0 pitch out of the park for a 2-run round tripper cutting the NCU lead to 4-2. Jillian Suratt re-entered the game to pitch and retired the side. She then retired six straight Eagle batters in the 6th and 7th innings for the win.
Northwest U's
Bethany Bay was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and
Katelyn Riedinger had the other hit with her home run for the Eagles going 1 for 2 and a RBI.
Kelli Peckham took the loss in the circle for NU, giving up 7 hits and striking out six.
Ashlee Cole led Northwest Christian with a 2 for 4 game and a RBI. Addy Hoskins was 1 for 4 with a RBI and Jillian Suratt went 2 for 4 and scored a run. Suratt showed some toughness as she took a hard line drive in the pitcher's circle off an Eagle bat in the 4th inning, hitting her in the face, but after a short time out, remained in the game. A scary moment for everyone.
Game 2 – Northwest U's
Kierston Perry and NCU's Katherine Walker got locked in a pitcher's duel for four innings as neither team could break into the scoring column. NCU finally took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 5th inning when Randi Kostner hit a two out single driving in Parker Bonife and Taylor Medley from second and third for what proved to be the game winning runs.
Northwest U (8-12, 4-8) got a late inning rally going in the bottom of the 7th when
Janey Ganta opened the inning with an infield base hit. Pinch hitter
Savannah Rush walked, moving Ganta to second.
Darian Godfrey then hit a single to center field with Ganta attempting to score from second. She was tagged out at home plate in a close play.
Alyssa Gonzalez scored on a fielder's choice but Walker got
Ricki Tacdol to ground out to end the inning and get the win.
Northwest U (8-12, 4-8 CCC) was led by
Darian Godfrey's 3 for 4 game.
Kierston Perry was 1 for 2 and
Janey Ganta went 1 for 1 pinch hitting for the Eagles. Perry went seven solid innings giving up just two runs and seven hits.
Randi Kostner went 1 for 3 with the game winning two RBIs for Northwest Christian (9-21, 6-6 CCC) while Ashlee Cole was 2 for 2. Taylor Medley was 1 for 3 and scored a run. Katherine Walker pitched a 5-hitter for the Beacons in seven innings, striking out three and walking five Eagles batters.
Northwest U remains at home and will host Corban University on Saturday while Northwest Christian travels to Portland to take on Concordia tomorrow.
