Eagles Edged in Final Second by SOU

Dak Shagren scsored 19 of his 27 points in the second half
Box Score ASHLAND, Ore. – Southern Oregon's Joel Spear hit a game winning free throw with one second on the clock as the No. 18 Raiders just got by the NU Eagles, 83-82, tonight in conference play.

NU's Dak Shagren hit a crucial 3-point shot with 16 seconds to go to tie the score at 82-all. Following an Eagle timeout and with SOU's shot clock running down, Spear was fouled by NU's Zach Smith with one second showing on the clock. Spear missed the first free throw, but was fortunate to make the second for the game winner.

Northwest battled the No. 18 ranked Raiders shorthanded tonight as they played without the services of their third leading scorer, Ben Tucakovic, who suffered a broken jaw in the Walla Walla game a week ago. Dak Shagren came through scoring 19 of his team high 27 points in the second half to help the Eagles stay shot for shot with Southern Oregon.

In the first half, it would be Michael Dupree's 14 points that would help keep the game close and give the Eagles a narrow, 40-37 lead at the half. NU would open the game with a 17-8 lead. Three straight treys, two by senior Zach Smith and one by Dupree would put the Eagles ahead 10-2 in the early going. Joseph Stack would come off the bench and hit a big trey at 8:10 to push the NU lead to 27-20. Eight straight points by Dupree would help the Eagles continue to lead, 35-28, with 4:53 left in the half. Dak Shagren's jumper at 2:27 would increase the NU lead to 40-30, but SOU would score seven straight to cut the Eagle lead to three at halftime.

The entire second half would be tightly contested with eight ties and five lead changes. Jordan West's lay-in with 7:35 left would give SOU a 66-61 lead, but NU would score six straight on two treys, one by Tomas Ogbaslassie and one by Jessie Norton to put the Eagles back into the lead, 67-66, with six minutes to go. The two teams would battle back and forth until the final seconds when Spear's lone free throw would prove to be the difference in the game.

Michael Dupree scored 16 points for Northwest U (8-14, 4-8 CCC) while Zach Smith scored 9 points on 3 for 5 shooting from the 3-point line. Jessie Norton added 8 and Tomas Ogbaslassie contributed 7 for the Eagles. NU shot 52 percent for the game and 48 percent from the 3-point line (13-27).

Southern Oregon (16-5, 9-2 CCC) was led by Joel Spear's 24 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Ben Desaulnier scored 20 points with 8 rebounds and 4 assists and teammate Jordan West added 13 points for the Raiders who shot 58 percent for the game. SOU edged NU in rebounding with a 32-27 margin.

"I am proud of our guys battling to the very end." Said John Van Dyke, NU head coach. "We have played a lot of close games this season and the difference in the outcome of each of those games is miniscule. Our challenge is to rebound from tonight and prepare for another tough game at Oregon Tech tomorrow afternoon, but I'm sure this group will give it their best."
