NCU Holds Off Eagles for Victory

Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. - Northwest Christian had five players score in double figures as the Beacons held off Northwest University, 71-66, to improve to 6-1 in Cascade Conference play and boost their season record to 12-4.
 
Omar Richards led Northwest Christian with 16 points and added 13 rebounds for a double-double. Kenny Blackwell and Jack Hackman each scored 13, Jay Mayernik scored 11 and Austin Kuemper contributed 10 for the Beacons.
 
In a closely fought first half with three ties and four lead changes, Northwest U would lead for nearly thirteen minutes until the final 42 seconds of the half when NCU's Kenny Blackwell would tie the score at 35-35 and, after an NU miss, Jack Hackman would drop in a driving lay-in with 6 seconds on the clock to give Northwest Christian a 37-35 halftime lead.
 
It would be Northwest U outscoring the Beacons 10-4 to start the second half as they would regain the lead, 45-41, at the 16:33 mark. Back would come the Beacons and after three ties, NCU would take the lead for good after two free throws by Omar Richards who scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half. With 7:07 to go, Richards would score again giving NCU a 61-54 lead. A 7-2 Eagle run would cut the NCU lead to 63-62 with 2:37 to go, but Northwest Christian would make good six of eight free throws in the final 44 seconds to preserve the victory.
 
For Northwest U (7-11, 3-5 CCC), Dak Shagren led all scorers with 20 points while teammates Ben Tucakovic and Paul Loranger each scored 11 for the Eagles. Northwest U out rebounded NCU 46-41 with 14 offensive rebounds. Tomas Ogbaslassie grabbed 10 of those rebounds for the Eagles.
 
Northwest Christian shot 40 percent for the game, but would go 6 for 21 from beyond the 3-point line for 27 percent shooting. NCU hit 13 of 23 free throws for 56 percent.
 
"Our guys continue to battle and never quit," said John Van Dyke, NU head coach. "Just a few bad bounces down the stretch was the difference of possibly coming through with a win, but credit Northwest Christian holding on for the victory. I'm positive our effort will soon result in a win for this group who continues to work hard in games and practice."
 
Northwest U will be at home again tomorrow night hosting Corban University in the Pavilion at 7:30 p.m.
