Dak Shagren and
Tre' Benton combined for 41 points as Northwest University remained unbeaten with a 78-63 non-league victory over Pacific Lutheran University tonight in Olson Gymnasium. Benton scored 21 points shooting 46 per cent while Shagren dropped in 20 points hitting 66 per cent of his shots.
The Eagles led the entire way as they slowly pulled away in the first half to take an 11 points lead after a
Ben Tucakovic 3-pointer with 10:59 to go in the period. PLU would chip away at the NU lead and pull to within one, 32-31, on a jumper by Kyle Sawtell at the 4:50 mark. But Northwest U would finish the half with a 9-0 run to lead 41-31 at halftime.
Northwest U would maintain their lead the entire second half with the Lutes getting no closer than seven twice in the half as the Eagles would post their eighth win of the season without a loss.
In addition to Benton's 21 and Shagren's 20, Northwest U (8-0) got 15 points from
Justice Martion off the bench and 10 points and 4 assists from
Michael Dupree. Benton led the Eagles with 9 rebounds as NU out rebounded PLU 39-32. The Eagles hit 30 of 61 shots for 49 per cent and 50 per cent from beyond the 3-point line.
Pacific Lutheran (2-2) was led by Brandon Lester's 18 points and Dylan Foreman's 14 points. Jared Christy brought down a game high 13 rebounds while the Lutes shot 41 per cent for the game.
"I'm pleased with the way our guys are making good decisions on offense and sharing the ball," said
John Van Dyke, NU head coach. "We're showing patience on offense and our defense is improving with each game as our newer players become comfortable with our system."
Northwest U will travel to Portland, Ore., on Saturday to play Portland Bible College in their final non-league game before starting CCC play on Tuesday hosting in-state rival Evergreen in Kirkland.
