Tech Ends Eagles Unbeaten String in Overtime

Dupree had a game high 37 points in the loss
Box Score KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Mitchell Fink's driving lay-up as time expired would give Oregon Tech a 98-96, double overtime upset victory over No. 13 Northwest U this afternoon on Danny Miles Court.
 
After Northwest U missed a scoring opportunity, Oregon Tech took the ball the length of the court with 6 seconds left as Fink's lay-up would go through the rim as the buzzer would sound.
 
Leading 75-69 with 1:23 to go in the game, Northwest U would give up a jumper to Michael Fink to cut their lead to four, 75-71 at the 1:04 mark. After a timeout, OIT would force an NU turnover with a steal by Brandon halter leading to two free throws by Fink to make it a two point, 75-73 ball game. A second straight steal, this time by Joel Yellow Owl would lead to an OIT jumper by Andrew Weber which would tie the game at 75-all, but NU's Michael Dupree would take the inbounds pass and dribble the length of the court giving the Eagles a 77-75 lead. Following a timeout, it would be Mitchell Fink with a jumper at the buzzer which would send the game into its first overtime.
 
In the first overtime, the teams would trade leads as the period would also see four ties. Michael Dupree would score two of his game high 37 points with 40 seconds to go to put NU up 88-86, but Tyler Van Kirk would take a pass from Andrew Weber and hit the jumper to tie the game at 88-88 with 23 seconds to go. Tre' Benton's 3-pointer would miss the mark as the game would go into its second extra period.
 
Joel Yellow Owl would give OIT a 96-93 lead with a 3-pointer with 1:56 to go, but Michael Dupree would answer 52 seconds later to tie the game once again at 96-all. Van Kirk would miss a shot for Tech giving NU another scoring opportunity, but Michael Dupree's 3-point attempt would miss with 7 seconds to go. After a Tech timeout it would be Fink with the game winner as time would run out handing the Eagles their first defeat of the season and first loss in CCC play.
 
Michael Dupree led all scorers and Northwest U (11-1, 3-1 CCC) with 37 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Ben Tucakovic would score a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Tre' Benton would contribute 12 points for the Eagles. NU shot 47.5 per cent for the game and out rebounded the Owls 44-40.
 
Oregon Tech (7-5, 1-2 CCC) was led by Joel Yellow Owl's 35 points on 14 for 25 shooting. Mitchell Fink added 22 points and a game high 9 assists for the Owls who shot 54 per cent for the game and 62 per cent in the overtime periods. OIT totaled 21 assists for the game with 15 turnovers.
 
"This was a hard fought game all the way," said John Van Dyke, NU head coach. "Credit Oregon Tech for making the plays when it counted. We just missed a couple of opportunities and have to learn to take care of the ball in pressure situations and I'm confident we will. We now have to show some resilience as we head to Southern Oregon for another tough contest tomorrow."
