Warriors Pull Away in Second Half to Defeat the Eagles

Zach Smith led the Eagles with 24 points
Box Score SALEM, Ore. – Corban University broke a halftime tie to pull away in the second half for a 97-79 Cascade Conference victory over Northwest University. Eagles Zach Smith and Dak Shagren combined for 47 points in the losing cause. Tied 42-42 at halftime, Corban outscored NU 55-37 in the second half for the win.

Corban got off to a fast start taking a 12-0 lead early in the first half. With the Warriors leading 19-9 at the 9:46 mark, a Dak Shagren jumper would spark an Eagle 10-4 run to close the gap to 23-19 after Ben Tucakovic's 3-pointer with 8:12 on the clock. Corban would increase their lead to 8, 27-19, but once again the Eagles would go on a 14-7 run to make it a one point game, 34-33, at 2:29. Zach Smith would hit a big 3-pointer at the buzzer to knot the score at 42-all as the half would end.

The teams would continue the tight battle 5 minutes into the second half. But Corban would then begin to slowly pull away from the Eagles and a Cyrus Ward lay-in with 6:40 to go would push the Warrior lead to 72-60. NU would be able to cut the lead to 8, 85-77, with 1:55 to go, but that would be the closest they would get as Corban would close out the game for the victory.

Northwest U (10-16, 6-10 CCC) got 24 points and 7 rebounds from senior Zach Smith and 23 points from junior Dak Shagren. Ben Tucakovic and Paul Loranger each scored 10 points for the Eagles who shot 43 percent for the game. The Eagles were without the services of Tomas Ogbaslassie who suffered a broken hand against Eastern Oregon on Jan. 20.

For Corban (13-10, 7-8 CCC), AJ Monterossi led the way with 22 points and 7 assists. Caleb Herzberg added 20 points with Cyrus Ward contributing 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Warriors shot 56 percent of their shots, 43 percent (9-21) from the 3-point line. Corban also won the rebounding battle with a 45-30 margin.

"I felt our team gave a good effort tonight, but we just didn't have enough in the second half," commented John Van Dyke. "It's been a challenging year for us dealing with injuries, but our guys have persevered through it all and continue to play hard each night."

Northwest U travels to Eugene, Ore., to play Northwest Christian at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
