Eagles Shutout Pacific Union for Second Win

Jose Valentine scored the clincher this afternoon
Box Score  ANGWIN, Calif. – The Northwest University Eagle men posted their second straight win in the preseason with a 2-0 shutout of Pacific Union atop Mount Howell above the Napa Valley Thursday afternoon.

A minute after Jose Valentine's shot on goal was saved by Pacific Union's Jose Nuno-Martinez, freshman Jordan Travis successfully put one past Martinez for the first score of the game at the 23:16 mark. Teammate Luis Rangel earned the assist. That would be the only shot to find its mark out of the 12 taken by NU in the first half as the Eagles would lead 1-0 at the break.

The two teams would battle without a score for over 61 minutes until Valentine would find the back of the net in the 85th minute as he would take Elijah Gordon's pass and finish for the 2-0 lead.

Daniel Christenson would earn the clean sheet for Northwest U (2-0) with 3 saves in 90 minutes in goal. The Eagles outshot the Pioneers 22-5, giving up just two shots in the second half. Jose Valentine led NU with five shots, three on goal.

Pacific Union's (0-1) goalkeeper, Jose Nuno-Martinez had a total of 11 saves in goal while Bila Kintaudi and Jose Lopez each had two shots for the Pioneers.

"I was pleased with how we approached today's game especially with how tired we were after a quick turnaround from yesterday's game," commented NU head coach, Gary McIntosh. "Playing our first back-to-back games, I felt the guys did a great job of moving the ball and controlling the game. Defensively the shutout today was important to us. We continue to get goals from different players and that shows we are getting everyone involved. We're looking forward to having Friday off before Saturday's game with Simpson."

The men play a doubleheader with the NU women in Redding, Calif., on Saturday when they play Simpson University in the finals games of their road trip.
