Eagles Hold Off Owls Comeback Attempt

Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. - Northwest University held off a furious comeback by Oregon Tech to edge the Owls, 101-96, tonight in CCC play. OIT scored 20 points in the final 3:21 to nearly catch the Eagles.
 
NU jumped out early in the first half as Justice Martion's jumper would give the Eagles a 19-12 lead seven minutes into the game. Tech's Mitchell Fink would make it a 38-33 game with 2:22 to go in the half with his driving lay-up, but Michael Dupree would hit a single free throw with 41 seconds to go to give Northwest U a 42-36 margin at halftime.
 
The Eagles would get off to another good start in the second half with an 11-7 run to give themselves a 55-43 lead at the 16:20 mark. Oregon Tech would then outscore NU 23-11 over the next five minutes to pull to within one, 66-65, on a Brandon Halter 3-pointer. With the score 78-71 with 7:16 remaining in the game, NU would heat up and go on an 18-5 run as Michael Dupree's two free throws would make it a 95-76 game at 3:21. The OIT would heat up with two 3-pointers and drawing fouls on two 3-ppint attempts as Tyler Hieb would sink three straight free throws wo make it a 97=91 game with 37 seconds to go in the game. NU would go 2 for 6 from the foul line and another trey by Hieb with 15 seconds to go would make it a three point game, 99-96. Dak Shagren would come through for the Eagles and sink two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to seal away the victory for Northwest U as Tech would miss a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
 
Michael Dupree led Northwest U (16-5, 8-5 CCC) with 24 points and 5 assists. Tre' Benton scored 19 points with 7 rebounds while Justice Martion scored 18 points pulling down 9 rebounds for the Eagles. NU held a narrow 43-41 margin in rebounding and shot 55 per cent for the game.
 
Oregon Tech (16-6, 9-3 CCC) was led by Mitchell Fink's 26 points and 7 assists before fouling out of the game. Brandon Halter dropped in 24 points with 7 rebounds and Tyler Hieb scored 22 points for the Owls. OIT shot 39 per cent for the game and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds.

"Oregon Tech's fight and run at the end of the game made things interesting for us tonight," said John Van Dyke, NU head coach. "But our guys refused to give in and made some plays and free throws down the stretch to pull the game out over a good OIT team. Playing together and staying together when faced with adversity is a good lesson in basketball and life."
