NCU's Big Comeback Foils Eagles

Justice Martion came off the bench to score 23 points tonight
Box Score EUGENE, Ore. – No. 7 Northwest Christian came back from a 14 point halftime deficit to outscore No. 13 Northwest U 60-34 in the second half for a 95-83 CCC win tonight. NU held a 49-35 lead at the break.
 
Northwest Christian was aided by Jack Hackman's six 3-pointers in the second half as he hit 11 overall for a game high 35 points. Hackman was 11 for 17 from beyond the 3-point arc tonight (65 per cent) as NCU shot 67 per cent from the 3-point line in the second period.
 
NU got off to a fast start in the first half taking a 10-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. But NCU would come back to outscore the Eagles 22-11 to take a 22-21 lead after Jay Mayernik's basket at 11:05. The Eagles would then heat up and outscore the Beacons 28-13 the remainder of the half to lead 49-35 as the buzzer would sound.
 
The Eagle lead would last seven minutes into the second half as NCU would slowly cut into the NU lead and a Mayernik score at the 13 minute mark would cut NU's lead to 56-55. With the game in its fourth tie of the half, Spencer Mattox would put NCU in the lead for good, 63-61, with his driving lay-up with 10:14 to go in the game. Hackman would continue his hot shooting hitting three treys in a 3 minute span with his last one giving NCU and 84-70 lead at the 3:50 mark as the Beacons would go on to improve to 11-3 on the season.
 
Justice Martion came off the bench to lead Northwest U (13-3, 5-3 CCC) with 23 points. Dak Shagren hit 6 of 12 shots on his way to 18 points and Tre' Benton added 14 points and 8 rebounds for the Eagles. After shooting 46 per cent in the first half, the Eagles cooled to 34 per cent in the second.
 
In addition to Hackman's 35 points, Northwest Christian (11-3, 5-2 CCC) got 23 points and 6 rebounds from Brendyn Taylor and 18 points and 12 rebounds from Jay Mayernik. NCU shot 70 per cent in the second half and 55 per cent for the game. The Beacons also dominated the backboards with a 48-30 rebounding margin.
 
"We've got to be able to put together two good halves against good teams like Northwest Christian," commented John Van Dyke, NU head coach. "NCU showed why they are ranked No. 7 in the NAIA with the way they came back and the way they shot the ball in the second half. We have to rebound with a solid effort tomorrow night in Salem."
