Alves Scores Twice in Eagle Shutout Victory

Lucas Alves scored two of the Eagles 4 goals tonight
Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – The NU Eagles scored all of their goals in the second half  for a 4-0 shutout victory over Multnomah University tonight at Delta Park.

After a defensive battle in the first half in which neither team would be able to score, the Eagles broke the game open in the second half with a little help from the Lions. NU outshot Multnomah 10-2 in the first half..

Alex Ballard put the Eagles into the lead in the 61st minute as he scored off his hooked corner kick as his ball was deflected by the MU goalkeeper and fell across the line for the unassisted goal.

At the 74:16 mark, NU got some help from Multnomah as the Lions inadvertently scored an own goal after offensive pressure by the Eagles and Lucas Alves. The defender on Alves, attempting a steal, deflected the ball into the net. Less than six minutes later, Alves scored from 20 yards out with a bullet from the right corner after a short run with the ball.

Alves, a junior from Sáo Paulo, Brazil, scored his second goal at 83:32 on a penalty kick to make it a 4-0 game as the Eagles would go on to earn the shutout.

Northwest U (6-3-1, 4-1-1 CCC) dominated the game offensively with a 26-3 shot margin including 11 shots on goal. Lucas Alves led Northwest U with 9 shots, two shots on goal and the two goals. Jordan Travis took 5 shots, two shots on goal. Daniel Christenson earns the shutout making two saves for the game.

Manuel Guillermo-Olivares made 7 saves in goal for Multnomah (2-9, 0-7 CCC), while teammate Nicolas Mboungou took two shots to lead the Lions.

Said Gary McIntosh, NU head coach, "Tonight was tough game to play. Multnomah was well organized and did a good job of making things difficult for us. We struggled to get going in the first half and I was not too pleased with how we played. The second half was a different story and the guys pushed through to find that first goal. Our energy in the second half was excellent and Chris (Iacolucci) and Jordan (Travis) were just great with their movement up top for us. That energy got us going and led to the other three goals. Lucas (Alves) was excellent tonight scoring two and forcing the own goal."

Next Up: The Eagles continue their road trip on Sunday in College Place, Wash., when they play Walla Walla University in a 1 p.m. conference game.
