Men's Cross Country

Women 5th, Men 6th at CCC XC Championships

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The NU Cross country teams saved their best for last as the women finished fifth and the men took sixth place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Cross Country Championships today.

Riley Sine was the top men's finisher in the 8k race crossing the finish line at 25:45.90, for 7th place in the field of 76 runners and earning All-Conference honors. Kyle Cole finished in 27:24.50 for 38h place; Craig Lambert, 27:46.40; Rafael Lara, 27:58.70; Gino Bruce, 28:12.30; Brian Guisinger, 29:44.00; David Walling, 30:52.40; and Owen Balthis, 31:21.80. NU totaled 157 points.

"It was the best team race on the men's side this year," said Mark Mandi, NU head coach. "And, I think it's the best CCC finish for the men since I've been at NU. Riley did great battling the front and led the majority of the race before falling off the lead pack late into the race. Kyle, Craig, Rafael and Gino did a great job packing up which really helped out group. I'm really proud of these guys. If we can get an invitation to the NAIA championships, it would be historic for us."

For the Eagle women, Sarah Estabrook finished 5th coming in at 18:41.60 with Lily Engelbrekt not too far behind her in 7th with her time of 18:44.30, just one second out of 6th. Both Estabrook and Engelbrekt earn All-Cascade Conference honors. 76 runners made up the field in the 5k race. Cassidy Brown took 23rd with a time of 19:44.20; Amberly Melendez 43rd, 20:56.90; Kathryn Anderson 44th, 20:58.60; Mia Valerio, 49th, 21:13.40; Quinn Dhaenens, 21:32.10; Madeline Goodin, 21:50.10; Megan Gollling, 22:36.00; and, Leila Praino, 23:19.00. NU totaled 120 points with the top five runners' points counting for the final standings.

Mandi continued, "On the women's side, we did what we needed to give ourselves a shot to qualify for NAIA nationals. Sarah (Estabrook) and Lily (Engelbrekt) continue to have a strong season. It's been a long time since we had to ladies finish in the top seven at the CCC finals. The depth of our group really helped us.  I don't think we had the same #5 finisher in consecutive races, but still continue to have good team races. I'm really proud of this group and the season they're having."
