Corban Sweeps Eagles on Day One

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HILLSBORO, Ore. – Corban took two games from the Eagles in the first of two doubleheaders this afternoon in Hillsboro Stadium. The Warriors shut out NU, 9-0, in 6 innings in game won and edged the Eagles 6-5 in a 7 inning game two.
 
Game 1 – Corban 9, Northwest U 0 (6 inns.)

 
Sabrina Boyd tossed a two-hit shutout and Taylor Eilders tallied two hits and three RBIs as the Corban University softball team downed Northwest University in game one of Friday's doubleheader in six innings, 9-0. Boyd improved to 8-0 on the season.
 
Corban took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two out, 2 run single up the middle of Eagle starter Stephanie Granger. Eilders single in her first run in the bottom of the second to increase the Warrior lead to 3-0.
 
Granger and the Eagle defense held Corban scoreless the next three innings, but would not manage to push a run across on their side. Corban then came up with a big 6 run 6th inning to end the game as Taylor Eilders came up with another 2 run single. Iris Rodriguez added another 2 run single to end the game.
 
Stephanie Granger went 5.1 innings for the Eagles (5-8, 1-3 CCC) giving up the 9 runs on 14 hits. Yeawa Asabi and Darian Godfrey got the lone hits for NU.
 
Corban (15-1, 4-0 CCC) was led by Eilders 2 for 4, 3 RBI game with Iris Rodriguez going 2 for 3 from the plate and driving in 2 RBIs. Jessie Isham was 2 for 4, scored twice and added 2 RBIs for the Warriors.
 
Game 2 – Corban 6, Eagles 5
 
Darian Godfrey's 3-run home run in the top of the 4th inning would give the Eagles a 3-2 lead, but Corban would come back to score 2 runs in the 4th and 5th innings to pull out a come from behind, 6-5, victory in the second game of today's doubleheader.
 
Trailing 2-0 after 3 innings, Godfrey would hit her home run with two outs in the top of the 4th inning driving in Maggie Harshaw and Allie Anderegg giving NU the 3-2 lead.
 
The NU lead wouldn't last long as Corban would regain the lead in the bottom of the 4th on a 2-run single by Maddy Melton scoring teammates Ashleigh Lynch and Sam Woodley for the 4-3 lead.
 
The Eagles would come right back in the 5th inning as Courtney Heard led off with a single to center and would score after a sacrifice bunt and throwing error by the Warriors. With two runners on, Maggie Harshaw reached first on a fielder's choice scoring Aubrey Slocum to put NU back in front 5-4.
 
Taylor Eilders would prove to be the Eagles nemesis as she would come through with a two out, two run double to right center for what would prove to be the game winning runs for the Warriors.  
 
The Eagles looked get off to a great start in the 7th inning when Yeawa Asabi hit a triple, but was ruled out at second for missing the base after a Corban challenge. The next two Eagle batters grounded out to end the game.
 
Northwest U (5-9, 1-4 CCC) was led by Darian Godfrey's 1 for 3 day including her first home run of the season and 3 RBIs. Yeawa was 1 for 2 and Courtney Heard went 1 for 3 from the plate, scoring once. Freshman Rachel Hawley took the loss going 6 innings giving up 6 runs on 11 hits with 4 strikeouts.
 
Allie Mendez gave up 5 runs and 6 hits in the circle for Corban (16-1, 5-0 CCC) to earn the victory.  Taylor Eilders finished a solid day at the plate with a 2 for 4, 3 RBI second game. Ashleigh Lynch was 2 for 3 and Maddy Melton was 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs.


"We are working to find consistency, consistency between our pitching circle, our defense and our offense," said Montessa Califano, NU head coach. "As soon as we can find consistency in the three we will find more success. The ladies repeatedly have shown fight and heart, we just need to play our game, eliminate mental mistakes and free on base passes. We focus on "next play" and they showed that in the second game, coming back hard after the first game."

 
The same two teams will go at it again tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled for 3 and 5 pm at Hillsboro Stadium.
