NU Splits Twin Bill with Mountaineers

Rachel Hawley pitched a 4 hitter in game one.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA GRANDE, Ore. – Pitching ruled the day in today's CCC doubleheader as the Eagles split their games with Eastern Oregon, shutting out the Mountaineers 1-0 in the first game and losing a close, 2-1, contest in game two. NU's freshman pitcher, Rachel Hawley, pitched a 4 hitter in the first game and EOU's Hailey Kline spun a 5 hitter in the second game.

Game 1 – NU 1, EOU 0

The Eagles ended a pitcher's duel in the top of the 7th inning today scoring the winning run in a 1-0 Cascade Conference victory over Eastern Oregon on Peggy Anderson Field.

NU's Rachel Hawley and EOU's Haylie Van Laethem were locked in a pitcher's duel until the Eagles last chance in the 7th when Allie Anderegg hit a one out infield single to get on base. Cara Cristion followed with another infield hit to the EOU shortstop with Anderegg moving to second, third and then scored on a throwing error. Hawley and the NU defense then held EOU scoreless and hitless in the bottom of the 7th inning for the win.

Hawley earned the win in the circle for Northwest U (9-19, 4-12 CCC) limiting the Mountaineers to 4 hits, striking out 5 and stranding 6 EOU base runners. Cara Cristion was 2 for 3 and Allie Anderegg went 1 for 3 and scored the winning run. Darian Godfrey and Courtney Heard were both 1 for 3 for the game.

For Eastern Oregon (19-11, 11-5 CCC), Haylie Van Laethem took the loss giving up the lone run and 7 hits. EOU committed 2 errors. Maryssa Santi led the Mounties going 2 for 2 with Taylor Gerlach and Lauren Burhan getting the other two hits.

Game 2 – EOU 2, Eagles 1

A late inning rally by the Eagles fell just short as Eastern Oregon defeated NU in the second game, 2-1, to split the CCC doubleheader.

The Eagles made it a close in the 7th inning when Maggie Harshaw got on base with a one out single up the middle. With two outs, Mikayla Wells walked and then Aubrey Slocum got on base on an EOU fielding error, scoring Harshaw. With two outs and two on, Yeawa Asabi grounded into a fielder's choice forcing pinch runner, Karrie Barnes at third base to end the game.

EOU took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning when Cheyenne Barker singled bringing in Lena Richards after an Eagle error. The Mountaineers increased their lead to 2 – 0 in the 5th inning when Barker came through with a double to left center driving in Taylor Gerlach.

Stephanie Granger went 6 strong innings for Northwest U (9-20, 4-13 CCC) giving up 8 hits and 2 runs facing 27 EOU batters. Maggie Harshaw was 1 for 3 scoring one run for the Eagles while teammate Danielle Bonsky was 1 for 2.

Eastern Oregon's (20-11, 12-5 CCC) Hailey Cline held the Eagles scoreless for 6 innings, striking out 12 NU batters. She gave up 5 hits, the one run to get the win and held 5 NU runners on base. Cheyenne Barker 2 for 3 with one RBI and Jorden Gerlach was 2 for 3 for the Mounties.

Said Coach Califano about today's games: "I felt Rachel (Hawley) held very strong in the first game and we were able to score a run to break the scoreless game to put us ahead in the 7th inning. Our bats could have been better, but the Eagles continued to make adjustments at the plate that would get runners on the bases; we just struggled to get them around. In the second game, Steph (Granger) did a great job and EOU got a couple of strong hits, but even in those situations, we already had 1 or 2 outs, so we had not dug ourselves a hole, and our defense played well to get us out of those situations. Our bats struggled today and we just made our adjustments at the plate a little too late. The Eagles are fighting. We are fighting until the last out and the team made that very clear today. I couldn't ask for much more than a battle until the end."

The two teams will play again tomorrow in another doubleheader with only the first game counting as a Cascade Conference counting contest. Games times are slated for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
