Eagles Hold On to Edge Evergreen

Box Score OLYMPIA, Wash. – In a tale of two halves, the NU Eagles nearly blew a 23 point halftime lead, but held off three Evergreen shot attempts in the waning seconds to hold on for a 76-74 Cascade Conference victory and breaking a five game losing streak.
 
The Eagles seemed unstoppable offensively in the first half as they shot 70% from the field and 69% from 3-point range on their way to a 55-32 first half lead. Led by Christian Hakilimali's 13 points on 5 for 6 shooting, NU hit 9 of 13 shots from beyond the 3-point arc. Leading 10-8 early in the period, the Eagles would heat up to outscore the Geoducks 33-14 to take a 42-22 with 4:47 on the clock left in the half. Justice Martion would give NU their largest lead of 27 points, 55-28, at the 1:27 mark, but ESC would score the final 4 points of the half for the 55-32 Eagle lead.
 
Evergreen would extend the floor defensively to start the second half forcing two turnovers and three missed shots to make a 13-2 run in the first 4 minutes to cut the Eagle lead to 57-45. NU would maintain a double digit lead for nearly 15 minutes until the 4:56 mark when Pat Ling would cut the Eagle lead to 70-61. Three NU turnovers would shave their lead to 72-67 at the 2:26 mark. Ling would convert a 3 point play with 21 seconds remaining to make it a one point game, 75-74. Hakilimali would make one of two free throws with 19 seconds to go giving the Geoducks three shots which would not find the mark as the buzzer would sound. NU's shooting would cool down in the second half as they would hit 8 of 24 shots for 33% as the Geoducks would outscore NU, 42-21.
 
Northwest U (9-10, 3-6 CCC) was led by Christian Hakilimali's 16 points and 7 rebounds. Four other Eagles scored in double figures: Kaelan Hicks, 13 points, Jasdeep Singh 12 points, Justice Martion 11 points and Tanner Davis 10 points. NU shot 53% for the game, 48% from the 3-point line.
 
Ryan Quigley scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds with 4 assists to lead Evergreen (2-16, 1-8 CCC) while teammate, Pat Ling, score 22 points adding 5 assists. The Geoducks out rebounded the Eagles 37-28 with 14 offensive rebounds while shooting 45% for the game.
 
"We're still learning how to win and close out games," said Jeff Drinkwine, NU head coach. "We had a very good first half and credit Evergreen for coming out with purpose in the second half and challenging us. I am proud we were able to hold off their charge and get the win."
