Raiders Hold Off Eagles

Box Score ASHLAND, Ore. – Southern Oregon would go 8 for 8 from the free throw line in the final two minutes of the game to hold off the Eagles for a narrow, 92-87 victory tonight in the Mountain Avenue Gym.

Senior Ben DeSaulnier would hit all eight of the free throws as the Eagles would be forced to foul late in a close contest, reminiscent of the double overtime game the two teams played in mid-December. The Raiders led the entire second half, but not without pressure from the Eagles to maintain that lead.

Southern Oregon took an early 24-14 lead in the first nine minutes of the first half after Josh McIntosh's lay-up in the paint. But the Eagles would slowly get back in the game and chip away at the Raider's lead and with 6 minutes remaining in the half, Justice Martion's jumper would make it a one point, 32-31 SOU lead. Kaelan Hicks would hit one free throw to tie the game and a Tanner Davis lay-up with 3:51 on the clock, would give NU their largest lead, 37-32.  With NU leading 39-38 at the 2:06 mark, SOU would go on an 8-0 run to close out the period to take a 46-39 lead at halftime after Conor Carroll's 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded.

SOU would take a 50-43 lead to start the second half, but from that point on, would not lead by more than five points the remainder of the period except for the final seconds. Northwest U would continue to put pressure on the Raiders and would pull to within a single point three times, but each time SOU would answer to hold on to their narrow lead. Christian Hakilimali would sink two free throws with 1:24 left in the game to make it a 82-79 game, but a 4-0 run by SOU, capped off by two DeSaulnier free throws would push their lead to 86-79 with 50 seconds left in the game. NU would cut the SOU lead to three in the final seconds, but it would be DeSaulnier hitting the clutch free throws to seal the win.

Tre Benton led Northwest U (9-12, 3-8 CCC) with 22 points and 5 assists. Justice Martion would contribute 18 points and Christian Hakilimali added 14 points and 5 assists for the Eagles who shot 50% for the game and 42% from the 3-point line.

Southern Oregon (13-7, 8-3 CCC) was led by Ben DeSaulnier, Tate Hoffman and Tristen Holmes all scored 19 points for the Raiders. Conor Carroll dropped in 13 points as SOU would shoot 53% for the night and hit 91% of their free throws (21-23). The Raiders out rebounded NU, 36-27.

"I can't fault our effort tonight," said Jeff Drinkwine, NU head coach, "and, shooting 50% for the game, one would expect a win. Unfortunately, Southern Oregon shot a little better and credit them for holding us off each time we made a run at them."
