Balanced Eagle Scoring Drops Wolves

Box Score COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – Northwest University had five players score in double figures as the Eagles would hold off a determined Walla Walla University team, 78-73, for a Cascade Conference win tonight.
 
65% shooting in the first half helped the Eagles get off to a good start tonight. A lay-up by Josh Meyer followed by a short jumper by Tre Benton would give Northwest U a 21-8 lead at the 10:46 mark. The Eagles would maintain a double digit lead for most of the half until Roy Zavala basket would make it a nine point, 55-35 NU lead with 1:17 to go in the half. Walla Walla would close the half with a 3-pointer as the Eagles would take a 47-40 lead into the locker room.
 
Walla Walla would continue their run to start the second half and would cut the NU lead to two, 47-45, after a Zavala trey at 18:02. The game would remain tight for the next eleven minutes until Kaelan Hicks would come up with a big offensive tip-in at the 6:32 mark to give the Eagles a 68-61 lead. But, a 9-2 Wolves run would cut the NU lead to two, 70-68 with 3:56 to go in the game. WWU would keep the game close and with 14 seconds to go, would make it a 76-73 game. With WWU forced to foul, the Eagles Ryan Ricks would hit two clutch free throws with 10 seconds to go to give NU a 78-73 lead to clinch the win.
 
Leading the Northwest U (11-16, 5-12 CCC) was Tre Benton with 17 points. Four other Eagles scored in double figures: Kaelan Hicks, 13 and Ryan Ricks, Justice Martion and Christian Hakilimali all scored 10 points. NU hit 33 of 64 shots for 52% and out rebounded WWU 35-33.
 
Wesley Burke scored a game high 27 points for Walla Walla (6-21, 2-15 CCC) with Michael Isotalo and Jacob Vargas both scoring 10 points for the Wolves. WWU shot 44% for the game.
 
Next Up: The Eagles are in College Place again tomorrow to play Walla Walla again at 4 p.m.
